Gülnar is a district town and a district in the Turkish province of Mersin . The district is located in the south of the province and borders Karaman in the north . The city has 8,078 and the district 28,551 inhabitants (as of 2010).

The former Gilindere ( Kelenderis ) and today's Aydıncık gave Gülnar its name. Gülnar was founded in 1867 and relocated in 1916. In addition to the city of Gülnar, there are four other municipalities (Büyükeceli, Köseçobanlı, Kuskan and Zeyne) and 41 villages .

Batteryyu is located directly on the Mediterranean Sea , about 100 km southwest of the provincial capital Mersin and south of the small town of Büyükeceli. The Turkish government approved the construction of a nuclear power plant there in 1976 .

Akkuyu is near a meeting point of many tectonic plates ( Anatolian plate , Arabian plate , African plate and Eurasian plate ). This is why this project has long received much criticism; especially since the devastating earthquake in Japan and the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in March 2011. In 2008, an output of 3,000 to 5,000 MW was planned, i.e. probably three or four nuclear reactors .

Worth seeing

The ruins of the ancient fortress of Meydancıkkale are located on a rock spur about eight kilometers southeast of Gülnar .
