Until 1965, Aydıncık was still called Gilindire , which is the Turkish form of the word Kelenderis . The city has a long history and was home to many different peoples. From the 10th century it came under the rule of the Turks. Until the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1920, Christian Greeks, called rum in Turkish, lived here alongside Turks. The mayor's office was established in 1972 and Aydıncık County was formed in 1987 .
