Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah ( jap. ゴジラ·モスラ·キングギドラ大怪獣総攻撃, Gojira, Mosura, Kingu Gidora: Daikaiju Sōkōgeki , "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: general attack of the giant monster" dt.) Is a Japanese monster movie ( Kaiju Eiga) from 2001 and the 25th film in the Godzilla series. Like all Japanese Godzilla films, it was commissioned by the Tōhō studios , directed by Shūsuke Kaneko, who previously made a film in this genre with Gamera - Guardian of the Universe from 1995 .

action

A nuclear submarine of the American Navy is near the base on Guam missing. Japan, which has an alliance with the USA with the peace treaty of 1945 , sends two mini-submarines, code-named Satsuma, to the coordinates where the missing submarine was last located. These are suddenly caught in a heavy current, one of the submarines being thrown against a rock and being destroyed as a result. The second submarine has visual contact with light blue shining spines.

At the same time, a film crew from the BS Digital Q mystery channel is shooting a report on a legend of giant monsters around reporter Yuri Tachibana near Myōkō in Niigata Prefecture . The village mayor, who previously granted the team permission to film, wants to prevent them from doing so again, as he and his advisor fear this report will be a false report that could deter tourists. But Yuri can convince him otherwise. After an earthquake in which the reporter also heard the scream of a giant monster, the mayor assures the team of his full support. Yuri sees a mysterious old man who has immediately disappeared without a trace.

The mayor uses the security of being able to earn the resulting fame to ingratiate himself with a woman he adores when she is attacked by a group of hooligans on motorbikes. These also destroy a millennia-old mosaic and then disappear towards the Otagiri Tunnel. Just as they drove into the tunnel, it collapsed and buried the rowdies. A truck driver who watches this also sees the mouth of a giant monster and flees in a panic. He thinks the monster is Godzilla. Rowdy students are also wreaking havoc and destroying mosaics at Lake Ikeda in Kagoshima Prefecture . When they are about to drown a defenseless dog in the lake, they are killed by a giant caterpillar and spun into a cocoon.

Yuri decides to do further research on the subject as the earthquake epicenter is moving. With the help of the science journalist Takeda, she arrives at a book by Professor Issayama, who describes three sacred protection animals of the Yamato . The next day, she and her father, Naval Admiral Taizo, who survived Godzilla's first attack on Tokyo in 1954, saw the report of the killed students. Yuri sees a connection with the incidents in Niigata.

Immediately they, Takeda and a crew member of the transmitter travel to Motosu , where the professor is in jail for disturbing the peace. He is very well known in the city, as he repeatedly prophesied the return of Godzilla. He also talks about it to Yuri, who has already seen him near Myoko. But he sees no means against the giant dinosaur in the weapons of the Japanese army, as it is driven by the angry thoughts of the forgotten soldiers who died in World War II . Issayama sends the reporters to the Fuji jungle, where the thousand-year-old Dragon King Ghidorah sleeps. Once there, they shed light on the legend of the sacred protective animals of the Yamato, Ghidorah, Baragon and Mothra. Yuri finds a mysterious stone that contains strange powers.

On the island of Magonote, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the island of Odo, where Godzilla once raged, the latter reappears and destroys the villages where a school class is currently staying. Defense Army reconnaissance units rush to find survivors when they, too, appear to be attacked and destroyed by Godzilla. However, for political reasons, the General Staff is reluctant to issue a disaster alarm.

At the same time, a man is trying to commit suicide in the Fuji jungle when suddenly the ground gives way and he ends up in a cave. There he sees the Ghidorah lying on the ice and, in panic, takes flight and reports it to the nearest police station in Gotemba .

Meanwhile, the army appears before the press and announces the alertness of the Japanese troops. The sole survivor of Godzilla's attack on Magonote was taken to Yaizu hospital. Yuri and Takeda have meanwhile handed over their research on the sacred protective animals to their father, who has doubts about the theory. In addition, the Japanese government has stopped the search for Godzilla. But the epicenter from Niigata moves on towards Tōkai and Taizō begins to believe in it.

The reports soon come true, because the monster that triggered the quake, Baragon, has appeared in Gotemba and seems to want to free the professor. Godzilla also reappears in the port of Yaizu. He walks unstoppably through the city and completely destroys it. The Defense Army notices that Godzilla and Baragon's paths will cross and they will meet in Hakone .

Meanwhile, Yuri and Takeda rush to Gotemba to inspect Baragon. But when they learn of Godzilla's appearance, they change their plan and drive to Hakone, where the giant monsters actually meet. However, Baragon has no chance against Godzilla and is killed with his heat beam. Yuri, who saw the fight up close, is slightly injured. Since Takeda doesn't want anything to do with Yuri's further research after this incident, he leaves her behind. Yuri, who no longer has a car at her disposal, buys a mountain bike in a nearby bike shop in order to be able to follow Godzilla's advance.

Godzilla is now moving towards Tokyo. Yuri can convince her broadcaster to set up a live link to her so that she can continue to report on the giant dinosaur. Meanwhile, the air force tries to kill Godzilla with bombs, which is unsuccessful. In the meantime, Ghidorah and Mothra are awakening from their persistent sleep.

While Yuri reports on Godzilla's progress, her father finds out and arranges for her to be arrested to save her. Meanwhile, Mothra and Ghidorah also make their way to Tokyo to fight Godzilla. In Yokohama , the army creates a line of defense that is now under the command of Taizo.

Mothra opens the attack on Godzilla. Yuri films the fight at the risk of her life. However, some soldiers are hit and killed by Godzilla's heat ray. Ghidorah has now also reached Tokyo and is supporting Mothra. The army decides to attack the dinosaur as soon as it has been weakened enough by the two protective animals.

While Yuri is being brought to safety by the soldiers, Godzilla fights against Mothra and Ghidorah with great success. The latter is even quickly put out of action. That's why the army intervenes and tries to distract him. The counterattack of Godzilla proves to be very fatal for the army, which is almost completely destroyed. When Godzilla also wants to destroy the remains of the army, Mothra tries to sneak up from behind, but is noticed by Godzilla and killed with the heat beam.

The remaining powers of Barugon and Mothra now unite in Ghidorah, thus unleashing the powers of the Millennial Dragon King. Without consideration he attacks Godzilla, which also means the destruction of the port of Yokohama. Ghidorah manages to push the dinosaur back into Tokyo Bay. In the water they continue fighting and Ghidorah manages to wound Godzilla.

Taizō sees this as an opportunity to give Godzilla the rest with a D-0-3 rocket, a rocket with a drill head. But since the remote control was destroyed by the dinosaur, he wants to fire it from a Satsuma. Yuri wants to prevent that, but her father sees it as his duty. In return, he gives her permission to continue reporting. To this end, Takeda joins her again.

Both report on the fight over the Rainbow Bridge . But when Godzilla hits the bridge with his heat beam, Yuri threatens to fall into the bay. Takeda can still hold it, but no longer save it. Both plunge into the depths, but the mysterious stone in Yuri's pocket falls out and touches Ghidorah, which gives him new strength. He creates a suction so that Yuri and Takeda land unharmed in the water, but Yuri passes out.

Takeda swims to safety with Yuri, where Ghidorah fights Godzilla again with all his might. However, he cannot assume that the dinosaur has absorbed the energy from Ghidorah's energy flashes and shoots it back. As a result, Ghidorah is now also finally killed. The dead souls of the protective animals reappear and Taizō drives his Satsuma directly into Godzilla's mouth, who swallows him.

Before Taizō falls into a coma, a vision of Yuri keeps him in mind. She is worried about her father when suddenly Godzilla appears in front of her and Takeda and wants to kill them. Shortly before, however, Taizō Godzilla shot a hole in his neck, causing the heat beam to escape through this wound and injure him more severely. He manages to escape from Godzilla's heat ray on his own. But he doesn't give up and tries the heat ray again. Because of the wound, however, this backfires and Godzilla is torn apart.

The Satsuma of Taizō shows up badly damaged, he himself is exhausted but unharmed. BS Digital Q is also happy about a hit that can bring the station far forward, but the interview with Issayama has been deleted. Yuri looks forward to hugging her father, but he still has to be examined for ionizing radiation . However, he pays homage to the protective animals. At the bottom of Tokyo Bay lie the scraps of Godzilla's carcass, including his heart, which suddenly begins to beat.
