Goosebumps , in the English original Goosebumps , is a paperback series with scary stories for children and young people by the American writer RL Stine . The first volume was published in 1992 and to date the series comprises almost 100 volumes. With 350 million copies sold worldwide in 32 languages, Goosebumps is considered the most successful children's book series after Harry Potter .

background

The series is designed for young readers aged 10 to approximately 14 years. The heroes change and are always mixed groups of boys and girls of two to four people. They experience their adventures in places that relate to the reality of the readers' lives. The basic literary principle is the interlocking of youthful everyday life and the supernatural.

Usually monsters play as big a role as ghosts or the undead . Places of action are mostly closed locations such as abandoned haunted mansions or school buildings at night. The heroes mostly live in small western American towns, suburbs, or villages, rarely in large cities. However, fictitious names are always used for the places.

Most volumes have one thing in common: a young first-person narrator tells the story from his perspective . It is also this narrator who is the first, sometimes the only one, to notice the horror ( identification ). The language is adapted to the current youth language, rather relaxed and colloquial . Horror also sometimes shows its comical sides: in the volume Das eheimliche Labor a father who is a clone researcher returns to the children as a daisy.

The following scheme can be seen in many volumes: A young person (usually a young teenager) moves into a somewhat remote house that is haunted or its surroundings are haunted by ghostly figures. Usually the adults do not believe the children when they tell them about the ghosts. Occasionally at the end there is an unexpected twist in the plot, in the course of which the protagonists turn out to be monsters themselves.

The disaster that was defeated at first often seems to return towards the end - but the outcome remains unclear. Occasionally the ending is humorous to ironic. For example in the band Panikpark , in which a dedicated amusement park monster gives the previously terrified family tickets. The young readers should be released from reading with a shudder, but not with a feeling of oppression. Only in rare cases (in the somewhat harder side series Doppelschocker with short stories) does the hero die.

With translations into around 32 languages, Goosebumps is one of the most successful children's book series worldwide. Goosebumps , goosebumps and its logos are registered trademarks of The Parachute Press, Inc. The books are published in German by Omnibus-Verlag , Munich.

TV series and film adaptation

Some of the stories in the series were also filmed for American television as the children's series of the same name, which ran from 1995 to 1998. A few episodes have appeared on VHS . In Germany they were shown on various channels on free TV and pay TV. In 2015, the first season of the series was released on Netflix, with a new dubbing that was recorded in Munich. In June 2015 the complete series was released on DVD. This includes 4 seasons with a total of 74 episodes (season 1: 19 episodes, season 2: 25 episodes, season 3: 22 episodes and season 4: 8 episodes). Season 4 is only available in the original with German subtitles.

Through the filming, the book series achieved an additional gain in popularity and the series became one of the most popular for children and young people between the ages of 10 and 15 years, as well as for many adults. In Disney World Florida specifically goosebumps show was shown with respect to the series.

The film Goosebumps was made in 2015 based on the novel series .
