Mike Elizalde (* 1960 in Mazatlan , Mexico ) is an American expert on special effects and make-up design.

Childhood and youth

Winston Miguel Elizalde was born in Mazatlán , Sinaloa. His parents were Miguel Angel Elizalde and Paula Torres Elizalde.

When he was five years old, his family emigrated to the United States, so he grew up in Alhambra , California. As a child, Elizalde was interested in movie monsters and tried to recreate them from collected materials and to transfer makeup designs onto herself. While attending Alhambra High School, he spent time at the Owen Magic Supreme magic shop, where he learned to work with his hands while learning how to perform magic.

Career

Elizalde taught himself makeup effects by studying the work of Dick Smith , Stan Winston and Rick Baker .

After serving in the United States Navy for eight years , during which time he was naturalized, he returned to Hollywood , California to pursue a new career path. Elizalde worked in several Hollywood special effects studios, including Rick Baker's Cinovation Studios and Stan Winston Studio, and trained in animatronics and as a puppeteer and makeup artist . In 1994 he and his wife founded the Spectral Motion studio , which specializes in special effects, prosthetic make-up, robotics and animatronics.

Elizalde is a member of the Academy of Magical Arts and served on the Board of Directors there from 2016 to 2018 . He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , where he was responsible for the make-up artists and hairstylists department for six years. He is also a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees , the Screen Actors Guild, and a sustaining member of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art .
