Superstar - Dare to dream (Original title: Superstar ) is an American comedy film directed by Bruce McCulloch from 1999 . The main character played by Molly Shannon , Mary Katherine Gallagher, comes from the comedy series Saturday Night Live .

action

Mary Katherine Gallagher is an Irish-American student in a Catholic high school and a social outcast. She dreams of becoming a superstar to get a kiss from Sky Corrigan. When she is sent to special education because of her hyperactivity , she meets the wild and just as socially awkward Helen Lewengrub, who becomes her new best friend.

Mary realizes the chance to become a superstar when her school holds a dance competition. She wants to participate, but her grandmother forbids her. Mary tries anyway and gets into an argument with cheerleader Evian Carrie Graham, which leads to Evian and Sky breaking up. Mary is now determined to enter the dance competition to get Sky's attention. When Grandmother Gallagher finds out, she tells Mary the truth about her parents' death. They were trampled to death during a Riverdance- like competition instead of being eaten by hammerhead sharks as Mary was previously told . Because of this, Grandmother Gallagher doesn't want Mary to perform.

However, she decides to help Mary with her performance for the dance competition as long as she does it herself. Mary and the other special education students rehearse for days. Mary wins the competition and so does Sky's heart. When Mary kisses him, however, she realizes that he is a terrible kisser and instead decides to kiss her boyfriend Eric Slater instead.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on October 8, 1999 that watching the film looked like "an act of rudeness." One could not feel empathy for Mary, because she was not just “unpopular”, but also “hostile” and “not very nice”. The film contains a lot of jokes about Catholics, some of which are funny, others just lame and forced.

Dennis Harvey, on the other hand, found Superstar in the Variety of October 8, 1999 as a "pleasant surprise". The film is "uneven" but "amusing", although it will probably not be able to build on the success of Wayne's World .

The Lexicon of International Films wrote: “An unimaginative and lame comedy based on a character from the US television show 'Saturday Night Live'. The fact that this is primarily struggling to adapt and is clumsy in the process soon turns out to be extremely tiring. "

Molly Shannon was nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for her performance .
