The Scent of Lavender is a 2004 British film . The plot is based on a short story by William John Locke .

action

Cornwall 1936: The elderly sisters Ursula and Janet take in a shipwrecked young man. His name is Andrzej from Poland. It turns out that he plays the violin with great virtuosity. But it is not only with his violin that he touches the hearts of the two ladies. In Ursula in particular, it awakens feelings and dreams of youth and fresh love that were long forgotten. When he and the Russian painter Olga Daniloff get closer, the two older women become just as jealous as the village doctor, who calculates his chances with the beautiful woman.

Olga convinces Andrzej to go to London to play for her brother, a well-known violin soloist. After a long time the sisters get a letter from him that he will perform in public with Daniloff and that the concert will even be broadcast on the radio. The sisters travel to London and the villagers follow the concert on the radio at the invitation of the housekeeper at the sisters' house.

Reviews

The film got a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 89 reviews.

  • Roger Ebert described the plot in the Chicago Sun-Times on May 12, 2005 as " a disappointment ". It is a pleasure to see Judi Dench and Maggie Smith together, but the portrayal by Daniel Brühl is " tiring ".
  • BZ rating: Sensitive film about the thoughtless pride of young people and the unreasonable demands of old age. A pinch of British humor ensures that he doesn't get too sad. There is no more beautiful and touching way to show what a crazy, vulnerable and wonderful thing a heart is - no matter what age.
  • The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency gave the film the rating of Particularly Valuable. The reasoning in the FBW report states, among other things: A finely thought-out script provided the film with enchanting scenes full of poetry, human warmth and great pain in the soul. The dialogues in their prescribed brevity allow word creations of great intensity. In addition, the typical English pun that flares up again and again with a sarcastic undertone. A careful camera captured the grandiose natural scenery of Cornwall in such a fascinating way - as well as the beauty of the mature and life-drawn faces of the two old ladies. The well-considered dramaturgy gives the film the time it needs to adapt to the rhythm of the 30s of the previous century. The meticulous equipment is precise and unobtrusive. And the musical design offers a special highlight of the film.

Awards

Judi Dench and Maggie Smith were nominated for the 2005 European Film Awards.

background

The film was shot in England . The box office in theaters was 6.76 million US dollars in the US and 2.6 million pounds sterling in the UK .

Andrzej is also originally Pole, but he can communicate in German, and so the first attempts at communication between him and the sisters are in German. Of course, this would not have worked in the synchronization and therefore had to be changed.
