Altfraunhofen Castle
Altfraunhofen Castle was a castle of the barons of Fraunhofen , located on a peninsula in the Kleine Vils in Altfraunhofen in Lower Bavaria . It was demolished in 1858. Above all, the castle island has been preserved.
history
The Fraunhofen family, a ministerial family that was first verifiable at the beginning of the 11th century, named itself after the town of Alten-Fraunhofen. In 1077 an imperial charter from Heinrich IV. Confirmed Frawnhofen as part of the basic equipment of the Frauenchiemsee monastery since its foundation in the 8th century.
In the 13th century, the Lords of Fraunhofen succeeded in securing the special position of a rule independent of the Bavarian duke. Around 1407 the moated castle was mentioned, which is surrounded by the Kleine Vils .
While Neufraunhofen Castle still exists and is family-owned, the Altfraunhofen Castle was demolished in 1858. The castle island with the moat, the gate and the remains of the wall have been preserved.
St. Nicholas , the cathedral of the Kleiner Vilstal, is 120 meters south .
The castle island has been used for gastronomic purposes since 1955.

The castle ruins are under monument protection (file number D-2-74-114-2) and are described as follows:
“Castle ruins on a peninsula: Castle demolished in 1858; preserved remains of the gateway, brickwork, 15th century. "
