German Teachers Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Teachers 'Association (DL) describes itself as the largest teachers' organization outside the trade unions of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) and is based in Dominicusstrasse in the Schöneberg district of Berlin . According to its own information, it indirectly represents 165,000 teachers through its membership in its member associations, which the respective associations confirm. All member associations belong to the German Association of Civil Servants, while the Association of Education and Upbringing VBE , also a member of the German Association of Civil Servants and, after the GEW, the largest association of teachers in Germany, does not belong to the DL.

history

The German Teachers' Association was founded in 1969 in opposition to the then "left" union of education and science GEW at the instigation of the German Association of Philologists and has only four members, namely the associations belonging to it. Today it defines itself as an “ideologically neutral, non-denominational and politically independent umbrella organization”.

On April 1, 2017, the Katholische Erziehergemeinschaft Deutschlands (KEG) became the fifth member association with, according to self-reported, 10,000 members, whereby the DL represents all educational areas, from pre-school facilities to upper secondary level, according to its own information. Teachers at special schools and comprehensive schools are not represented, however, the representation of teachers at primary and secondary schools is represented solely by the KEG, which only organizes a very small minority of teachers in these schools.

On April 11, 2018, the Federal Association of Teachers at Vocational Schools merged. V. (BLBS) and the Federal Association of Teachers at Business Schools e. V. (VLW) for commercially oriented teachers to the Federal Association of Teachers for Vocational Training eV (BvLB) for teachers at vocational schools ; as a result, the number of members fell back to four associations.

organization

The DL presidium consists of the president, the treasurer and the chairmen of the four member associations.

Partners or members of the German Teachers' Association are:

President

Since July 1, 2017, Heinz-Peter Meidinger , former senior director of studies at the Robert-Koch-Gymnasium in Deggendorf , has been president of the DL and successor to Josef Kraus , who has held this office since 1987. From 1969 to 1984 Clemens Christians was long-time President of the Teachers' Association, from 1984 to 1987 Ernst Kiel . The treasurer has been Dominik Berdin, a qualified business teacher, since 2011. Josef Kraus describes Clemens Christians as the first president of the DL. (Kraus, 50 Years of Re-education, 2018, page 113)

Positions

In December 2016, the German Teachers' Association criticized the fact that performance and quality requirements in the German education system were continually being reduced in order to be able to present better grades, among other things. That includes the number of high school graduates and also applies to the grade point average. In some federal states, for example, the number of "one-year-olds" has risen disproportionately. School policy is often only focused on increasing the high school graduation rates.

President Meidinger criticized, among other things, the G8 and the "inflation of good grades". In 2018 he advocated the ban on the right to strike for civil servants and a ban on cell phones in schools, at least for students under fourteen; In addition, in 2019 he spoke out against a permanent switch to summer time. He also advocated a nationwide central high school diploma and language tests for three- and four-year-olds. (see Meidinger's educational policy statements )
