Clemens Christians

Clemens Christians (born October 11, 1923 in Paderborn ; † August 5, 1998 in Hamm ) was a German high school teacher , senior director of studies and president of the German Teachers' Association (DL).

Life

After the end of World War II , Christians returned from Soviet captivity. He then studied in Marburg , Freiburg , Paris and Münster . In 1950 he became a grammar school teacher for French and Latin, first in Warburg, then in Paderborn and later in Hamm. In 1964 Clemens was elected to the city council of Hamm for the CDU , where he remained until 1989. From 1966 to 1970 he was chairman of the "Philologists' Association of North Rhine-Westphalia" of the German Philologists' Association. In 1969 he was a co-founder of the German Teachers' Association (DL) as a counter-organization to the left-wing unions, its president until 1984 and then honorary president until his death. In 1970 he took over the management of the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium Hamm . He held the office until 1987.

On November 19, 1976, Christians also became, with Jürgen Domes and Thomas Nipperdey, one of the three chairmen of the Federal Freedom of Science (BFW) founded in 1970 , an association for educational policy in response to the student movement . He held the office until 1994.

Honors

  • Christians was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
