The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium Hamm is a high school in the independent city of Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The grammar school is located in the Werries district in the immediate vicinity of the Maximilian Park and the Maxipark Arena . The school is divided into a new building and an old building, which are connected by a glass-roofed corridor. The school grounds also include surrounding meadows with a biotope. It is named after the Prussian statesman and reformer Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein (1757–1831).

history

The high school previously had 5 locations. On the Ostenwall teaching was provisional from 1902 to 1905 in order to bridge the construction phase of a new secondary school . In 1905 the school moved to the newly built building on Feidikstrasse, as, according to the building authority, this was the ideal place, as it is centrally located and yet far away from industrial areas. This location taught for 39 years until the building was completely destroyed by aerial bombs in the winter of 1944 during the Second World War . From 1946 the new location was a building of the vacant infantry barracks on Josef-Schlichter-Allee. Due to a lack of space, the Graf-Adolf-von-der-Mark-Schule and the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium were first merged to form the municipal high school for boys and then the municipal mathematical, natural science and modern language grammar school for boys.

A few years later, the first schools were able to take their old locations again, only the Stein Gymnasium remained in the barracks. The then senior studies director Heinrich Mohr asked for a new building, but this was repeatedly rejected by the city administration because there was a lack of financial resources. After tough and long negotiations, Mohr obtained a building permit, so that on April 24, 1958, construction work began on Marker Allee. It took two years until the construction work was completed and lessons could now be given in the new building.

In 1970 Clemens Christians became head of the grammar school and held the position until 1987. At the same time, Christians was also President of the German Teachers' Association from 1969 to 1984 .

In the mid-1970s, with around 1000 students, it became too cramped in the building that was once built for 650 students. The consequence was an extension.

In 1980 a triple gymnasium was built for the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium, and a year later another wing was added. The costs for these two building measures amounted to approx. 9.5 million DM.

The last move of the grammar school from the city center (Marker Allee) to the former Werries school center (Uentrop secondary school and a secondary school) took place on the basis of a decision of principle by the city council in 1985.

The first lessons at the current location in Werries took place at the beginning of the 1988/89 school year. At that time, however, the school grounds still consisted of a dreary concrete building from 1974, a gymnasium and a school yard with a large meadow. Due to a lack of space, some lessons had to be relocated to today's youth café Werries on Alten Uentroper Weg by the end of the 1990s.

In 1995 it was decided to build another wing at the current location. Approx. 8.5 million DM were invested in the new building, as the new building contains biology, IT, music and media rooms. The remaining rooms are used for teaching in the upper level. At the time, the new building was state-of-the-art in terms of energy-saving measures. There is a photovoltaic system on the roof and light sensors and water-saving taps have been installed in each room.

In 2000, classes could begin in the newly built building. Later, a paved schoolyard and a park with a biotope were created for biology lessons. There were further renovations in the old building. There, all floors and ceilings including lighting were replaced. When the roof of the physics-chemistry-art wing was renovated, the original architectural overall impression was retained despite an almost complete replacement.

In 2015 the sports hall was renovated.

special offers

Bilingual teaching

Since the school year 1991/92 bilingual lessons have been offered from the 5th grade onwards in order to be able to offer a bilingual Abitur (history or geography in English). A trip to England with host families is planned for each bilingual class in the seventh year of school in order to apply and deepen English skills.

Library

The school's own library offers pupils the opportunity to do research on the Internet or to borrow books free of charge. The library opens from 9:30 a.m. on weekdays and is supervised by parents. From 2018 there will be the possibility to read the local daily newspaper in the library free of charge.

MINT

MINT stands for math, computer science, natural sciences, technology and is offered voluntarily at this school from levels 5 to 7 as a working group. The number of participants is around 20 per year. The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium MINT-EC school is the only school in the area and can offer high school graduates the MINT-EC certificate if they perform well.

IB - International Baccalaureate

In addition to the acquisition of the Abitur as a possible higher school qualification, which is customary in Germany, the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium offers the International Baccalaureate as an international school qualification, which complements the line of the bilingual branch in the upper school and ends with a school qualification.

cafeteria

Since 1995 the high school has had its own cafeteria where students and teachers can eat. It is organized on a voluntary basis by the parents of the students. The profit made from the cafeteria is invested in projects that support the school.
