Rainer Helmig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rainer Helmig (born March 26, 1957 in Hamm , Westphalia) is a German expert in modeling multiphase flows in porous media and a professor at the University of Stuttgart .

Scientific career and research area

Rainer Helmig is a nationally and internationally recognized specialist in the field of numerical modeling of multiphase flows in porous media. With his working group, which he led, he pioneered the way in Germany after 1990 in order to expand the model concepts previously developed mainly in the petroleum industry to include environmentally relevant issues. He was influenced by a research stay at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the early 90s , where he got to know the methods developed there in Karsten Pruess' group. He received his doctorate in 1993 from the University of Hanover , habilitated in 1997 at the University of Stuttgart and in 1997 followed a call to the Technical University of Braunschweig , where he headed the Institute for Computer Applications in Civil Engineering. In 2000 he was offered the chair for hydromechanics and hydrosystem modeling at the University of Stuttgart . He has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 2010 .

The application areas of the models developed by Rainer Helmig and his group include: B. Pollutant propagation processes in the unsaturated and saturated soil zone, CO 2 injection processes in deep geological formations for long-term storage of this greenhouse gas, gas-water transport in fuel cells and flows through heterogeneous and fissured porous media.

activities

Rainer Helmig was a member for three years and then from 2006 to 2011 chairman of the Senate Commission for Water Research of the German Research Foundation . He is also the spokesperson for the German-Dutch graduate school NUPUS (non-linearities and upscaling in porous media) and a member of the board of directors of the Stuttgart Research Center for Simulation Technology. Rainer Helmig is also co-editor of the journal Advances in Water Resources (AWR).

Awards

In 1995 Rainer Helmig was awarded the Dresden Groundwater Research Prize. The US National Groundwater Association (NGWA) has appointed Rainer Helmig as the lecturer of the Henry Darcy Lecture Series in Groundwater Science for 2015. In 2017 he was elected to the German Academy of Science and Engineering .
