The Mandajors Castle ( French Château de Mandajors ) is the ruin of a hilltop castle in Saint-Paul-la-Coste in the Cevennes in the Gard department .

history

The castle was built on a rocky outcrop along an important road in the 12th century by the lords of Mandajors .

In the course of the Counter Reformation, a royal garrison was stationed at the castle to fight the Protestant camisards in 1702 , which was set on fire and destroyed in the Camisard War in 1703.

The castle chapel , a simple Romanesque hall with a semicircular apse , has been preserved and has been used for Protestant worship since 1727. Its gable bears the inscription Église réformée de France, 1727 .
