Chris & Cosey (renamed Carter Tutti since 2003 ) is a British band from the field of electronic pop music founded in 1981 , whereby the demarcation from art music is difficult and in many areas does not make sense.

history

In 1981 the British industrial band Throbbing Gristle broke up. Two of its members, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti (real: Christine Carol Newby ), who were also a couple in private, signed a record deal with Rough Trade Records for a duo under the name Chris & Cosey in the same year .

In 1982, in cooperation with Rough Trade, they founded their own label called Conspiracy International , which occasionally appears under the name CTI . As a result, more experimental recordings were published here that did not promise any major commercial success, as well as collaborations with other musicians and bands.

From 1992 onwards, due to health problems, they temporarily severely restricted their live performances and devoted themselves more to work in the studio. At this time there was also a cooperation between CTI and the label World Serpent Distribution . This connection resulted in numerous publications, often collaborations with other musicians and groups.

In 1998 they ended their phase of almost exclusively studio work and began touring again.

From 2000 they released two new CD series on CTI: The Library of Sound (LOS) and Electronic Ambient Remixes (EAR) . Both series (four albums each have been released to date) are instrumental, ambient- oriented music. The LOS series is expressly used as background music for art exhibitions, cinema trailers, etc., but is also played live at concerts. The EAR series releases are earlier solo pieces by Carter or Tutti that were remixed together . In 2003 the name was changed from Chris & Cosey to Carter Tutti . This was justified by the fact that due to a long-term development, the current concept was no longer identical to that of the early days.

In 2004 there was a reunion of Throbbing Gristle. Nevertheless, Carter Tutti continues to publish his own material.

style

Like Throbbing Gristle's, her style is shaped by a mixture of musique concrète and electronic music , which is characterized by a tension between electronically generated sounds, sampling, and mostly rhythms generated by a drum computer on the one hand, as well as acoustic, natural elements such as singing, cornet and Guitar on the other hand results.

Over the years there has been a continuous development of the band, so that in the course of time many musical directions found their way into Carter Tutti's work (see also under meaning ).

Collaborations

In the course of their career, C&C worked with numerous well-known musicians and bands. A selection: Monte Cazazza , Coil , Current 93 , John Duncan , Erasure , Eurythmics , Boyd Rice , Robert Wyatt .

Numerous artists have remixed songs from the band including: Carl Craig , Cosmic Connection , Fred Giannelli , Mute Records founder Daniel Miller , U -Ziq , Vapourspace and Andrew Weatherall .

meaning

In many areas of electronic pop music, Chris & Cosey has a pioneering role with a corresponding influence on later performers. In the 1980s they were early representatives of the techno and DJ scene as well as Goa music. Her album Trance was sampled frequently, the track October Love Song is considered a techno-pop classic and Exotika developed into a Goa hit. They are also known today as the creators of the modern acid sound .
