Andrew Weatherall (born April 6, 1963 in Windsor , England , † February 17, 2020 in London , England) was a British musician , record producer and DJ .

In addition to publications under his own name, he was particularly known for his work in the projects The Sabers of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen .

Weatherall died of complications from a pulmonary embolism at the age of 56 .

Career

Andrew Weatherall began his career as a music journalist when he started a fanzine called Boys Own in the late 1980s . Through his work as a DJ he received his first remix commissions, including for New Order (Worlds in Motion) and the Happy Mondays ( Hallelujah , together with Paul Oakenfold ).

The band Primal Scream selected him as a producer for their 1991 album Screamadelica . The success of the album allowed Weatherall to cement its reputation as a producer of modern dance music. With the band Psychic TV he produced the album Sirens in 1995 .

Andrew Weatherall himself was also active in the field of graphic design , he was responsible for the visual design of the Sabers of Paradise EP Versus , which contained remixes by Depth Charge , Chemical Brothers , Nightmares on Wax and LFO .

In the course of his career Andrew Weatherall has made remixes for artists such as Björk , New Order , Saint Etienne , The Orb , In the Nursery and Stereo MCs .

The Sabers of Paradise

In 1993 he founded the project The Sabers of Paradise with producers Jagz Kooner and Gary Burns . Various records and EPs were released during this time. The band was successful in the English charts with their long player Sabresonic as well as with various singles, especially the tracks Wilmot , Tow Truck and Smokebelch II . A remix of the latter was also released by producer David Holmes .

The band's releases were distributed by the indie label Warp Records .

At the same time, they saw themselves as music publishers and published their own works on the label of the same name (distributor FFRR ) as well as publications by Blue, Technova, Slack, Musical Science, Jack of Swords, Conemelt and Waxworth Industries. The most successful artists were Secret Knowledge , whose track Sugar Daddy was remixed by Paul van Dyk, among others , and was released under license from the Berlin trance label MFS .

The Sabressonic Studios also produced the publications of the group The Aloof (Ricky Barrow, Gary Burns, Jagz Kooner, Richard Thair, Dean Thatcher). The style of their music ranged between techno, trance and dub techno .

The Sabers of Paradise disbanded in 1996.

Two Lone Swordsmen

Together with Keith Tenniswood , Weatherall founded the music project Two Lone Swordsmen in 1996 . Tenniswood has already published under the pseudonyms Bargecharge and Radioactive Man on the Fuel label and has worked with David Holmes and the band Red Snapper , among others .

The first album was released in 1996 under the name The Fifth Mission on its own label Emissions .

As the successor to the album Tiny Reminders from 2001, another album was released called Further Reminders , which included remixes by artists such as Lali Puna , Calexico or Ricardo Villalobos . In 2004 the album Peppered With Spastic Magic was released , which contains a collection of remix works for artists Lali Puna, Alter Ego , Stereo MCs and Luke Slater .
