In the nursery

In the Nursery , ITN for short , is a British music and artist project that was founded in Sheffield in 1981. In addition to Dead Can Dance, it is one of the founders of neoclassical music and one of the pioneers of martial industrial .

history

In the Nursery live at the Theaterfabrik in Munich-Unterföhring, 1992

In the Nursery was founded in 1981 by the brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone - initially in the form of a classic rock line-up - with Anthony Bennet as a third member, who left In the Nursery in 1985. The trademark of the formation was the use of a military drum from the beginning . It was not until two years later that the first releases When Cherished Dreams Come True and Witness (To a Scream) appeared , with a sonic proximity to the works of Joy Division .

From the mid-1980s, In the Nursery increasingly turned into the post-industrial environment. The 12-inch singles Sonority , released in 1984 on the New European Recordings label by Death in June , and Temper from 1985 mark this turning point and anticipate the development of martial industrial due to the increased use of the military drum . Classically inspired elements also emerge more clearly for the first time ( Arm Me Audacity ).

In 1986, Twins was the first full-length work to unite the previously stylistically trodden paths, before the complete change to a classically influenced style with the album Stormhorse in 1987 . With its musical ambience, Stormhorse is considered to be a pioneering work for neoclassical music. With the following albums, In the Nursery continued the new path to the 1994 album Anatomy of a Poet , on which the writer Colin Wilson performed some of his favorite poems. Many of the compositions are based almost exclusively on library sound samples.

For the later albums, In the Nursery increasingly used ambient elements, without, however, completely abandoning the use of the drums. With Les Jumeaux , Klive and Nigel Humberstone also founded a side project specially created for ambient music, which produced two albums in 1996 and 1997 with Feathercut and Cobalt .

They also started the so-called Optical Music Series in 1996 , in which they set old silent films to music with a new soundtrack and also perform this live. The eight parts of the series include adaptations to Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari , Asphalt , The Man with the Camera , A Side of Madness , The Passion of the Maid of Orléans and The Fall of the House of Usher .
