Theater factory in the Optimolwerke

The theater factory was a Munich event location in the Berg am Laim district , which originated in a brick hall in Unterföhring that was converted into an event hall . The location was mainly known to the independent scene in the 1980s because of its events outside of Bavaria .

history

The original theater factory was a little east of the Unterföhring S-Bahn station, northeast of Munich. It was a somewhat shabby brick building on a former company site. The Munich successor is located on the site of the former Optimol works , a former lubricating oil manufacturer.

Theater factory Unterföhring (1983–1992)

The Munich restaurateur Wolfgang Nöth recognized that there was no hall for concerts in Munich, with its very strictly monitored curfew at the time , so he bought the empty hall in Unterföhring with Herbert Frey in 1983 and invested in event technology. The hall held around 1000 visitors. The successful location was Nöth's entry into his career as an “indoor mogul”. After its closure in 1992, the hall was demolished.

Concerts

The location became famous primarily through numerous concerts by prominent musicians such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers , Blondie , Billy Bragg , The Kinks , The Damned , Carl Perkins , Ben E. King , The Jesus and Mary Chain , Heinz Rudolf Kunze , Roy Buchanan , Bad Religion , Beastie Boys , Toy Dolls , Einstürzende Neubauten , Dan Reed Network , Wanda Jackson , the Trio Erika Pluhar , António Victorino de Almeida & Peter Marinoff . The theater factory also gained notoriety as a jazz venue .

Several concert recordings were made in the theater factory, for example the album No Material Live In Munich Germany by Ginger Baker (1987), parts of Axel Zwingenberger's album Boogie woogie live (1987) or in 1989 a live double album by Melissa Etheridge .

disco orange

The Friday “disco orange”, organized by Jürgen Birr aka “ Anurakta ” ( Sannyas name), the initiator of the Theatron Festival and operator of the Pulverturm club on the former Alabama depot site, was well known around Munich. The "disco orange" also formed the financial backbone of the theater factory.

The idea for the disco event series was born in 1981 at Bhagwan's Bavarian Buddhafield , where around 1,500 Sannyasin disciples expatriated from Pune (Poona) met for a two-day convention at the Gut Eicherloh riding stable in Finsing .

It was characteristic of the disco events that the same songs were regularly played over longer periods of time, mostly in the same sequence, including: Aerosmith - Rag Doll ( Rockapella Mix), Anne Clark - Our Darkness , Frank Zappa - Bobby Brown (Goes Down) , INXS - Mystify , Joachim Witt - Goldener Reiter , Melissa Etheridge - Like The Way I Do , The Mamas and the Papas - Dream a Little Dream of Me , Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) and Stretch - Why did you do it (maxi version).

Because of its success, Birr had the name of the series of events protected as a word mark from February 1995 to March 1996 inclusive .

International Rock 'n' Roll / Rockabilly Meeting

In 1985 the "International Rock 'n' Roll / Rockabilly Meeting" took place in the hall for the first time , at which bands from the international scene came together. The meeting, which was known far beyond Bavaria, then took place annually and for years was the largest scene meeting on the European continent. After the theater factory was closed, the meeting took place in 1993 in Nöth's cultural center in Riem . From 1994 it was held in the new Alabama hall in the former Munich radio barracks , then in the theater tent Das Schloss . The festival took place a total of nineteen times until 2004.

Blues festival

A blues festival took place once a year .

Black Christmas 1985

Also known was the 1985 "Black Christmas", a counter-event to the classic Christmas Eve events, with sometimes bloody performances and concerts for the audience of the independent scene.

Theaterfabrik Munich (since 2009)

In May 2009, Nöth and Mathias Scheffel reopened an event hall called the Theaterfabrik on the Optimolwerke site in Munich , which had been leased since January 2003 (for more details, see the article Kultfabrik ). The hall was completely gutted, modernized and brought up to date with the latest sound and lighting technology. In addition to concerts of international greats of various musical styles, regular DJ parties are also held here . Among other things, Enrico Ostendorf plays here . The hall and the adjoining club can accommodate between 500 and 1000 guests, depending on the type of event. The surrounding carnival scene has also found its home here.
