Theatron Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The free “Theatron” music festival in Munich has been held since the early 1970s and attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year. With the “ MusikSommer ” program in August 2000, the event achieved an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 2002 as the “longest continuous music open air festival in the world”.

venue

The festival will be held on the floating stage , which juts slightly into the lake of the Munich Olympic site to the west of the swimming pool . Around 5,000 visitors find space on the steps of the quarter-round amphitheater and the adjoining green slopes and can see the round concrete platform with a diameter of 20 meters and an area of 280 square meters. Due to the structure similar to the ancient Greek theater , the stage and event also got their names.

history

Theatron in the late 1970s

The actual initiator of the music events was Jürgen Birr aka " Anurakta ", himself a sannyasin fan who was already in the summer of 1973, one year after the XX. Olympic Summer Games , here for the first time sporadically brought musicians onto the floating stage in the Olympic Park. For a long time, therefore, the audience came mainly from the hippie and Bhagvan movements. In 1974, Birr organized the first open-air “Theatron” concert with the band Sahara on June 23 with Artur Silber , himself a drummer in a band called Sonnenschiff and later at Central Park , in collaboration with the Jugendkulturwerk Munich and Einberg Musik Motor .

development

“Theatron” in the mid-1970s, back then without a stage construction

The first concerts were held on the bare concrete surface. Over the years, a mobile stage system for the artists with a roof was added and the equipment became more professional. In addition to the performers, who mostly come from the regional environment, often young talents, more and more well-known greats present themselves at the “Theatron”, some of whom originally gave their first concerts here, which were originally relatively unknown. The better-known performers who have performed at the “Theatron” include Scorpions , Eisbrecher , Sportfreunde Stiller , Culcha Candela , Mic , Etta Scollo , Bananafishbones , Megaherz , Fury in the Slaughterhouse , Christoph Weiherer , Passport , Emil Bulls , and Pussybox , Ougenweide , Marionetz , Ramses, Bullfrog, Guru Guru , The Comics , Franz K. and Killerpilze . In 2004 Artur Silber handed over the management of the event to the present day makers Judith Becker and Antonio Seidemann, founders of EurArt .

In the early 1990s, the Theatron concerts, then still known as “Theatron Rocksommer”, took place all day on Sundays. When the concept was changed and the name was changed to “Theatron MusikSommer”, that changed. Today, “Theatron” is organized by ARGE Theatron MusikSommer , which, in addition to the EurArt festival management, alternates between various independent, commercial and municipal organizers, including the municipal one Kulturreferat, the city youth welfare office, the JugendKulturWerk, the street workers , the Feierwerk -verein, the Rock House-Verein and the media center Munich of the JFF Institute . In addition to the support of the Munich Olympiapark GmbH, the event is made possible by other sponsors.

The audience of the “Theatron” has long been made up of all walks of life and all age groups. Many visitors still bring their own drinks and food with them, although the event is now accompanied by a mobile beer bar above the rows of spectators. For reasons of noise protection , the music events end at 10 p.m. and the averaging level at the mixer is 90 dB (A).

At the MusikSommer 2015, the 60 centimeter higher dance floor in front of the stage was completely blocked as a prophylactic measure.

Probably since 1996 the actual series of events has been called “Theatron MusikSommer”. The event takes place at the same time as the adjacent Impark Summer Festival . For around a month, bands or individual performers of various musical styles and other artists perform every evening. Short film evenings and other cultural offers also characterize the stage program.

Theatron Pentecost Festival

The three-day Whitsun Festival has complemented the summer event since 2000. In 2007 it was supported for the first time by the BR youth and scene magazine Zündfunk and was part of the Bavarian Open , which was then replaced by on3 (since 2013 puls ). In 2014 the event took place from May 23rd to 25th, around 14 days before the weekend of Pentecost. Among other things, Gin Ga , Aloa Input , Matteo Capreoli , Farewell Dear Ghost and again Jesper Munk , who already performed here at MusikSommer 2013, were there.
