Farewell Dear Ghost is a 2013 founded indie pop - band from Vienna .

history

The head of the project is the singer-songwriter Philipp Szalay (* 1989) from Upper Styria , who learned to play the guitar himself during his school days. In 2006 he recorded the first unofficial album with his first self-written songs together with Paul Plut von Viech . Szalay has lived and studied in Graz since 2008 and has devoted himself seriously to his music.

In 2013 he founded the music project Farewell Dear Ghost. Szalay named the project after the song of the same name from Tobias Kuhn's first "Monta" album Where Circles Begin .

The debut album We Color the Night was released on November 15, 2013 on the Austrian independent label schoenwetter schallplatten . The single Fire reached number 1 on the FM4 charts on November 16, 2013 and was voted number 9 in the top 100 of 2013 by the FM4 music department. The band was nominated for the FM4 Award at the Amadeus Awards 2014 .

Farewell Dear Ghost was shown at Waves Vienna 2013, among others. Farewell Dear Ghost first appeared in front of a larger audience in November 2013 as supporter of The Naked and Famous at the Gasometer in Vienna . In the first half of 2014 the band went to the Flex Café in Vienna, the Beatpol in Dresden , the E-Werk cultural center in Erlangen , the Cologne building 9, the Tollhaus cultural center , the Uebel & Hazardous in Hamburg and the Freiheiz in Munich to be seen at the Theatron Whitsun Festival . From April 30 to May 3, 2015 the band was on tour in China and played sold-out concerts in Beijing , Nanjing , Shanghai and Wuhan . The radio station FM4 published the tour diary of drummer Andreas Födinger.

On December 9th, 2015 the video for “We Were Wild Once” was the first forerunner of the EP “Skin” announced for February 12th, 2016. The title entered the FM4 charts on December 26th as the highest new entry of the week at number 8 and reached 1st place within 3 weeks on January 16, 2016. At the end of January, both the German and Austrian booking agencies confirmed that the band would support the US rock band Nada Surf on their European tour. The band performs in Germany , Belgium , Holland , Switzerland , Austria and Italy . On February 3, 2016, the group announced that the leading Austrian telecommunications provider A1 Telekom Austria was using the song “Fade Out” from their debut album “We Color the Night” in its current radio campaign. The band then released an official video for the song, which was filmed during the live performance at the Fm4 birthday party. On March 1, 2016, the band was a guest on the late night show Willkommen Österreich on ORF eins and played a live version of the track “We Were Wild Once”.

In 2016 the band performed in numerous concerts in Austria and Germany as well as in Istanbul and Prague . In 2017 the band intensified their activities abroad, they performed a. a. in Budapest , Budweis , Zagreb , Prague and Tel Aviv . This year the band also played at the two most renowned showcase festivals in Europe, the Eurosonic Noorderslag in Gronigen , Holland and the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg . The highlight of the international activities was an 11-day tour of Asia that took the band to Korea and China . Concerts were played in Seoul , Hefei , Ningbo , Shanghai and Beijing . On the days when there were no concerts, a music video for the third single from Neon Nature , “Hollywood Dreaming”, was shot in Shanghai . As on the China tour in 2015, drummer Andreas Födinger reported in a tour diary, this time published by The Gap magazine .

In autumn 2016, the band began work on the follow-up album to We Color The Night . The first studio session took place in December 2016, as with the debut album and the EP Skin , the Graz producer Christofer Frank worked again this time . The drums and piano recordings were made in Judendorf , in the Opus Recorder Studios by Ewald Pfleger , otherwise they worked in Frank's c-60 studios in Graz. Two more studio sessions followed until 12 songs were recorded in early July and work on the album was completed.

On June 8, 2017, the first single from the album was released: “Pink Noise”, with a video produced by the Viennese directing duo Apesframed . The second release was the song "Moonglass", for which Denise Haslinger created a lyric video. The band played both songs live for the first time on July 14, 2017 at the Rock Im Dorf Festival in Inzersdorf . The third release was the album opener "Hollywood Dreaming", the video for it was produced by Franziska Seifner and Isabella Strehlau. "Tease" (duet with Avec ) and "Kimono Blazer Vibe" were the fourth and fifth releases.

This time the album was mixed by Alex “Fire” Tomann , mastering was done by Werner Weitschacher, as with the previous releases. The Salzburg designer Lucas Gerstgrasser created the artwork for CD and vinyl , both the artwork for the debut album and the skin EP were also created by him. Viennese photographer Christoph Liebentritt took the photos on the cover and in the booklet . The album Neon Nature was released on October 13, 2017 on the Ink Music label.

On February 15, 2018 it was announced that the band with the album Neon Nature had been nominated for the FM4 Award at the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2018 . After the first voting round, it was announced on February 22nd that the band had reached the top 5 and thus the final. On March 22, 2018, Farewell Dear Ghost won the FM4 Award 2018.
