Jærens Rev

Jærens Rev (the reef of Jæren ) is an elongated, partly stony sandbar off the southwest coast of Norway, southwest of Stavanger . It is located in the far west of the Jæren region and the municipality of Klepp in the province ( Fylke ) Rogaland . Other names are Jaerens Rev, Jærenrev / Jaerenrev, Jæderens Rev / Jaederens Rev and Jæderenspynt / Jaederenspynt.

The shoal extends almost 2 nautical miles to the west in front of the Revtangen headland , the westernmost point of Jæren . It is very shallow: at Klausgrunnen, about 1.5 nm off the coast, the water depth is still only 3.5 m. For safe bypassing is a light buoy about 1.8 nautical miles from the coast at the western end of the shoal approximately at position 58 ° 45 '  N , 5 ° 26'  O . Also, the navigation aid is a company incorporated in 2004, 16.5 m high steel beacon on Revtangen; their top mark has a side length of four meters. About 6 nm further north-northeast is the Feistein fyr lighthouse on the small Feistein archipelago .

Jærens Rev was the scene of many shipwrecks, and from 1852 to 1993 there was therefore a sea ​​rescue station at Reve north of Revtangen.

Revtangen Bird Observatory

Jærens Rev, Revtangen, the long sandy beaches on both sides of Revtangen and Lake Orrevatn not far behind the coast are frequented by many wading birds , and the Stavanger Naturhistoriske Museum, a branch of the Stavanger Museum , established one as early as 1937 Ornithological station in Revtangen, the first of its kind in the Nordic countries . When the Norwegian Air Force took possession of parts of the site in the 1950s as a target area for bombs and gunfire , the ornithological station was relocated in the fall of 1954 about 1.5 km further northeast near the Reve farms, where it is still located today is located. Every year between 6,000 and 12,000 waders and passerines are caught there, ringed and then released again. Almost 300 different bird species have been observed there so far.
