Kindernothilfe Germany

General

Kindernothilfe is one of the largest non-governmental organizations for development cooperation in Germany . It is now involved in cooperation with local partner organizations in 33 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America and supports around 1.9 million children and their families. In addition to development projects and humanitarian aid in the project countries, Kindernothilfe also provides campaigns and lobbying work in Germany. The donation work is supported by over 245,000 donors, around 1,000 volunteers, the Kindernothilfe Foundation and the Kindernothilfe organizations in Austria , Switzerland and Luxembourg . For the serious handling of donations, Kindernothilfe has received the donation seal of the German Central Institute for Social Issues annually since 1992 , which it has been awarded annually since then.

aims

The aim of Kindernothilfe is to promote the implementation of the rights of children and young people around the world in order to enable them to live in dignity, free of poverty , violence and abuse . Kindernothilfe primarily supports children who are affected and threatened by particularly serious violations of children's rights: street children , working boys and girls, AIDS orphans, sexually abused and exploited children and children with disabilities.

history

In 1959 Christians founded the “Action Hungry” in Duisburg to help children in need in India . In the early 1960s, the number of children supported rose from five to 255. This rapid development led to the fact that the "Action Hungarians" was further developed on January 7, 1961 into the registered association "Kindernothilfe". In the 1960s and 1970s, the association expanded its work to other countries, including Ethiopia , Indonesia and Brazil . Kinderothilfe Austria was founded four years later . The Kindernothilfe Foundation was founded in 1999, and Ewald-Peter Lachmann is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. In 2004 Kindernothilfe Switzerland followed, in 2013 Kindernothilfe Luxembourg. In May 2019, ARD broadcast a television service in honor of the 60th anniversary of Kindernothilfe from the Salvatorkirche in Duisburg, in which Christina Rau , Sabine Heinrich , Manfred Rekowski and the Wuppertal carolers participated.

Working method

Kindernothilfe works with various instruments in order to promote the realization of children's rights . To this end, the association relies on helping people to help themselves , community development, humanitarian aid , social work, and campaigning and lobbying . The Children's Fund works with local partner organizations to make children's rights a reality, and its child rights approach is primarily based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child . In the course of its domestic work, Kindernothilfe supports the interests of children and young people in developing countries with campaigns and alliances. To this end, the association works with German and international development politicians, exchanges ideas with them, and carries out publicity campaigns and press work. In this way, Kindernothilfe has an influence on political concepts and legislation and on the financing of development projects. In addition, a major focus of domestic work is looking after donors, sponsors and volunteers, as well as working with the media. In addition, Kindernothilfe has been awarding the “Children's Rights in One World” media prize annually since 1999 to journalists who deal with the topics of children's rights and children's rights violations in their articles. Christina Rau is the patron of the award . In addition, Kindernothilfe is targeting schoolchildren in Germany with the “Action! Kidz - Children against Child Labor” campaign.

Focus of work

In Africa , Asia and Latin America , Kindernothilfe primarily supports girls and boys who are affected by particularly serious violations of children's rights, and combats the causes. The thematic priorities of the domestic and international work of Kindernothilfe therefore include: social, economic and political inequalities, child labor , street children , children with disabilities , violence , abuse, early marriage, refugees , poverty , discrimination , HIV and AIDS , hygiene and environmental protection .

Child protection

Kindernothilfe sponsors numerous programs to protect children from abuse and mistreatment. The basis for this is their child protection policy, with which, for example, all employees at home and abroad are made aware of how abuse and maltreatment can be prevented, how suspected cases are transparently reported and how cases of abuse and maltreatment are dealt with. In addition, Kindernothilfe is involved in the international child protection alliances Ecpat and Keeping Children Safe.

Support options

Kindernothilfe has four main forms of funding. On the one hand, the child rights organization can sponsor a child or a project. At the end of 2014, the charity introduced a new form of long-term funding that is not tied to a specific project or sponsored child. There is also the option of a one-time donation of any amount. Under the umbrella of the Kindernothilfe Foundation, donors can also set up their own foundation, an endowment fund or a support foundation. In addition, around 1000 volunteers throughout Germany support the work of Kindernothilfe by, for example, working as translators or getting involved in so-called work or friends' groups. In the Action! Kidz - Children against Child Labor campaign, children and young people can support working boys and girls in the poorest parts of the world.

criticism

In the projects that were initially supported by Kindernothilfe, mainly day-care centers and student dormitories were built and maintained. They should provide individual children with both schooling and vocational training . In the late 1970s there was increased criticism of such sponsorship models in development cooperation. In 1977, Kindernothilfe commissioned the sociologist Alexander Thomas to study the sponsorship model for helping children in need. In response to the study results, the charity decided to develop and support more broad-based programs. Since then, this has been happening with self-help groups and community development projects, with which entire villages and regions are supported for the benefit of the children.
