The Hochalpine Institut Ftan (HIF, Rhaeto-Romanic in the idiom Vallader : Institut Otalpin Ftan , IOF) is a middle school with a boarding school for girls and boys in Ftan in the Lower Engadine in the canton of Graubünden . It is the oldest private school in the Engadine .

School history

founder

Andrea Rosius à Porta (* 1754, † 1838 in Ftan) was born as the son of the pastor Johann Rosius à Porta from Ftan and Anna Bonorand. He himself became a Protestant pastor in 1776. In 1777 he was an Italian teacher at the Philanthropin School in Marschlin Castle . After the school closed, he became a private tutor to the von Salis -Marschlins family and looked after the two sons Rudolf and Carl Ulysses at the military academy in Dijon . In the following 14 years à Porta was field preacher in the Graubünden regiment Anton von Salis-Marschlins in France. At the end of 1792 he returned home and settled in Ftan.

He headed the Institut à Porta from 1793 to 1829. With his textbook Il magister amiaivel ("The friendly teacher", Luzein 1819) and the establishment of the first private school in the Engadine, he laid an important pedagogical foundation for education in the region.

Beginning

The school was founded on October 1, 1793 by Andrea Rosius à Porta as a girls' school. It was the lack of educational institutions for the wealthier youth in the Engadine that led à Porta to found the institute. Most schools in the late 18th century were in poor condition. In Ftan the lessons were usually given by two farmers who had no pedagogical training and were not monitored. The Institut à Portas quickly enjoyed great popularity and the number of female students grew rapidly.

The school was first housed in the village in a palazzo in the Luisa Planta. After a village fire, it was temporarily relocated to Zuoz in 1794 . Classes in Ftan could be resumed in 1796. In addition to the moral and religious orientation of the lessons, language learning was a special focus. Andrea Rosius à Porta headed the institute himself until 1829 and then handed it over to his two sons.

20th century

After the Rhaetian Railway had also reached the Lower Engadine, a new building was erected west above the village in 1913 and the school was renamed the Fetan High Alpine Daughter Institute . In 1976, the school was also made accessible to boys - initially only externally. In 1993 the name was changed to Hochalpines Institut - Institut Otalpin Ftan . Since then boys have also been accepted as boarding school students.

21st century

In the 2012/2013 school year, 158 students attended the institute. In 2015, the recertification as a Swiss Olympic Sport School (sports training facility of the Swiss Olympic Association ) was revoked. School operations at the High Alpine Institute in Ftan should be discontinued for the new school year. Various initiatives tried to avert the closure. On July 29, it became known that a solution had been worked out on a political level with the Lower Engadine regional association Pro Engiadina Bassa and the municipality of Scuol , which would enable the HIF to continue operating in the short term and a new start in the long term. On July 31st, the institute announced that lessons would definitely start for the 2015/16 school year due to a secure number of students. The number of students in the school year 2018/2019 was 76 and in the boarding school with a capacity of up to 120 places only 18 were occupied. In January 2020 there were 24 students in the boarding school and work was done towards internationalization by signing a cooperation agreement with an international school.
