Andrea Rosius à Porta (* baptized November 16, 1754 in Fideris , † August 10, 1838 in Ftan ) was a Swiss Reformed clergyman and educator .

Life

Andrea Rosius à Porta was born as the son of the pastor Johann Rosius à Porta and his wife Anna Bonorand in Fideris and baptized on November 16, 1754. When à Porta was four years old, his family moved to Zuoz . There he received his school education and was accepted into the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod on June 10, 1776 . This allowed him to work as a pastor in the Free State of the Three Leagues . First he was a teacher for Italian at the Philanthropin in Marschlins Castle . This can only be proven from 1777, because this school closed in the same year. At the same time, he continued his training in several branches of science, including physics .

He then became unemployed and decided to become a tutor. He later worked as a field preacher and spent 14 years in France. Probably in 1792 he returned to Ftan, where he was probably active as a pastor; it is noted that he himself baptized on December 28, 1792. After that he was a representative pastor several times in Ftan and the surrounding communities.

On October 1, 1793 à Porta opened the Institut à Porta (today: High Alpine Institute Ftan ), because in his opinion the school situation in the area at that time was very bad. At one school, for example, only two farmers were taught who had hardly any pedagogical training. From April 25th to April 26th, 1794 there was a fire in Ftan, so that the institute was relocated to Zuoz. It was not until two years later, on October 15, 1796, that lessons could take place again in Ftan. When the Austrians occupied the canton in 1798 and the French in the following year, school teaching became difficult again. Only in 1829 - in the meantime normal lessons with a focus on foreign languages were possible again and the educational establishment had become quite successful - à Porta withdrew and transferred the school management to his two sons. À Porta died on August 10, 1838 in Ftan.
