Encyclopedia of the Medieval Chronicle, Volume 1

The Encyclopedia of the Medieval Chronicle ( EMC ) is an encyclopedia specializing in late antiquity and medieval chronicles and annals ; it was edited by Graeme Dunphy and is published by Brill Verlag in Leiden . Thus it is both a literary dictionary and a reference work on historiography .

description

Both chronicles and annals are historical works that were written in antiquity as well as in the Middle Ages. They are important to historians primarily as witnesses to the historical sections they contain; for literary scholars they are relevant for reasons inherent in the text and for cultural historians they are interesting because of their perspective on the place of the author in his own construction of history. Illustrated copies are also of interest to art historians. Chronicle research as an interdisciplinary field was primarily established by the Medieval Chronicle Society . The foundation stone for EMC was laid as part of this company.

The EMC contains about 2500 mostly very short articles about individual authors or anonymous works. Most of them are from the western Christian world, but there are also articles on Slavic, Byzantine, Syrian, Islamic and Jewish chronicles. These contain information on the date, language, form and handwritten tradition. In addition, particularly relevant current research questions are discussed. There are also about 60 longer “thematic” articles on specific aspects of chronicles.

The two-volume work was published in 2010 and has around 1830 pages. Around 450 scientists worked on it together. An electronic version with additional articles has been online since 2012.
