Hollókő Castle

Hollókő [ ˈholːoːkøː ] ( German Rabenstein ) is a municipality in Szécsény County in Nógrád County in northern Hungary. The place got its name because, according to legend, the ravens carried away everything at night that people built during the day. The community belongs since 1987 to the World Heritage of UNESCO .

Hollókő consists of two parts, the old town and the new town. Parts of the old town are used today for tourism (postal museum, Volkshaus, tourist hostel).

Every year at Easter , tourists can enjoy an old Hungarian tradition in which the bachelors of the village pour a bucket of water over the girls (nowadays this is done with colognes ).

The old town burned down completely in 1909, but was precisely rebuilt and is now protected by UNESCO. Parts of the castle, which played a significant role against the Ottoman siege in the 15th and 16th centuries , have also been restored.

387 inhabitants (2001).
