history

Emergence

The Russian State University of Commerce and Economy (RSUHW) is the successor to some of the earlier established educational institutions that existed in Russia until the 18th century. At that time there was a large number of professional educational institutions in the country which imparted knowledge in the field of trade at the lower and middle level. The first schools of this kind were established in Moscow in 1772 and in Saint Petersburg in 1804 . A little later, one of the Moscow educational institutions was given the status of an Academy of Commercial Sciences. With the rapid development of a network of lower and medium-sized educational establishments with a commercial profile, the question arose in business circles of how qualified teachers can be trained for the emerging system of commercial schools. The rapid development of industry and trade at the beginning of the 20th century intensified the need in the Russian Empire to have highly qualified specialists available.

The activities and resources of the Society of Friends of Commercial Sciences, founded by merchants and industrialists, made a major contribution to improving commercial education in the country. The state also showed interest. In the Department of Commerce and Manufacture , a regulation “About commercial schools” was drawn up in 1896. After confirmation by the State Council, Finance Minister Graf Witte delivered the draft of this document. Witte stated:

“The development of business education should be one of our most important measures for the successful development of our internal and external trade. Commerce suffers from fundamental imperfections, the removal of which should receive our most earnest attention. The elimination of these inadequacies can above all be a cleverly established business school that pursues practical goals. "

20th century

The increase in commercial education also supported the Russian business community. Their activists founded a society for the "dissemination of commercial education" in Saint Petersburg, Kiev , Moscow, Kharkiv and Michurinsk . Evening classes were open to members of the society if they worked in, or wished to work in, industrial and commercial establishments. In 1902, at the Congress of Directors and Representatives of the Trustee Councils of Commercial Schools in the Country, the need to hold teacher training courses was discussed. The Moscow Society for “Dissemination of Commercial Knowledge” took on the task of solving this problem. The first 110 listeners came to the lecture on September 8, 1903 . In 1906 this school was reorganized with higher business courses that took four years of training. On February 19, 1907, it was renamed "Handelsinstitut". An analog institute was opened in Kiev in 1912. In the Moscow Trade Institute there were departments of economics and trade technology. In contrast to the usual commercial school, the training at the commercial institute was more profound, more general and broader. The merchandise experts and commercial agents were trained in the disciplines of law, applied and natural sciences.

From 1919 a number of commercial schools were converted into industrial and industrial engineering schools, for example in Moscow, Tver , Nizhny Novgorod , Saratov and Rybinsk . In the 1920s, the period of the New Economic Policy , technical colleges were established in Kursk , Pyatigorsk , Yekaterinburg and Leningrad . Some higher education institutions also started their work - reopened economics institutes. In 1927, under the supervision of the People's Commissariat for Education of the USSR, there were 14 universities with industrial-economic faculties , 578 technical schools with commercial and accounting departments, and 61 schools with commercial apprenticeship training. But the number of students sank to about a third compared to 1916. On this basis, the RSUHW was created in 2002.

The university today

The RSUHW as a multi-layered university complex comprises seven groups of specializations that traditionally focus on the training of cadres for trade and services. Today, approximately 70,000 students study in 22 specializations of higher education and 27 specializations with higher education . There are eight faculties, six colleges and technical schools, 27 institutes and branches in regions of the Russian Federation and a branch in Bishkek , Kyrgyzstan . The opening of further branches abroad is currently being examined, particularly in Luhansk , Uzhhorod and Sukhumi . The university has 231 chairs , 12 scientific research centers and an institute for qualification and further education. In the years from 2002 to 2008 alone, the number of students grew from thirty-two to seventy thousand.
