    The Eurasian Economic Community ( EurAsEC , JewrAsES ; partly Euro Asian Economic Community ; Russian : Евраз ийское Э кономическое С ообщество, ЕврАзЭС ; English : Euras ian E conomic C ommunity, EurAsEC ) was a politico-economic alliance of European and Asian former Soviet Union .

    The member states committed themselves to dismantling trade barriers and tariffs as well as to economic cooperation among themselves.

    With the entry into force of the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty on January 1, 2015, the EAWG ceased to exist.

    history

    The Eurasian Economic Community was formed on October 10, 2000 by the GIS members Russia , Belarus , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan . The contract formally entered into force in May 2001. In May 2002 the states of Moldova and Ukraine were granted observer status in EURASEC. Another observer state was Armenia . Russia and Belarus sought particularly close cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Community with the Russian-Belarusian Union .

    In January 2006, Uzbekistan also joined the Eurasian Economic Community. This was announced by the Uzbek President Islom Karimov at the then meeting of the Economic Community in Strelna near Saint Petersburg . At the end of 2008, Uzbekistan left the community.

    In 2009, Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus joined the Eastern Partnership , which links them with the European Union , against Russia's will .

    On May 29, 2014, the Eurasian Economic Union was founded, which started its work on January 1, 2015 and replaced the EAWG.
