Life

Melnichenko was born on March 8, 1972 in the city of Gomel , Belarus . After winning the Russian Physics Olympiad, he studied at the physico-mathematical boarding school of the renowned Lomonossow University in Moscow. He then graduated from the Russian Plekhanov University of Economics . Melnichenko, who initially studied physics and completed a degree in "Finance and Credit" in Moscow in 1997, recognized the major new business opportunities that arose from the decline of the Soviet Union and the subsequent upturn in Russia.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Melnichenko set up exchange offices and later made his first fortune. According to his own account, this earned him his first start-up capital of 50,000 US dollars. In 1993 he founded the MDM bank. During the Russian crisis in 1998, many private commercial banks collapsed, while the MDM bank emerged stronger from the difficult times. The turmoil also spiked MDM as it began buying equipment and assets from companies that were in trouble. This ushered in a new phase of expansion within the MDM group into steel pipe, fertilizer and coal production. In 2007 he sold his stake in a bank and used the money to build an industrial conglomerate.

As Bloomberg reported, his vision at the time was to consolidate fragmented assets in risky and run-down industries and then build leading international companies in new areas. These industries - industrial plants, fertilizers and coal production - were not viewed as "strategic" for Russia and were not subject to the political influence felt in other sectors such as oil and gas, diamond and gold mining.

Today Melnichenko is the owner of industrial holdings, including a. from EuroChem and SUEK . He holds 100% of Eurochem, the largest manufacturer of mineral fertilizers in Russia. SUEK is one of the largest Russian coal miners and electricity producers. Melnichenko holds 92.2% of the SUEK.

According to Forbes, Melnichenko’s companies employ more than 100,000 people and have invested around $ 21 billion in fertilizer and coal production over the past 15 years.

Private

Melnichenko, who is a Russian citizen and lives in Moscow, has been married to Aleksandra Melnitschenko (née Nikolić) from Belgrade since 2005 . Among other things, she worked as a model and was a member of the Yugoslav pop group Models .

Melnichenko received a 119-meter-long mega-yacht named A in 2008 . Since 2012 he has had a sailing yacht with the name SY A built by Rendsburger Nobiskrug GmbH (a company of the Kiel-based German Naval Yards Holdings ) , which is the largest sailing yacht in the world with a length of almost 143 meters and was completed in October 2016 .
