The SY A (name during the construction phase: White Pearl , also referred to as Project 787 by the shipyard ) is a sailing yacht owned by the Russian billionaire and oligarch Andrei Melnichenko . After commissioning, the ship will be the largest sailing yacht in the world with a length of almost 143 meters . The construction of the ship is said to have cost around 400 million euros. The owner already has a motor yacht with the name A .

construction

The contractor for the construction of the SY A was the Nobiskrug shipyard . Since the keel was laid in 2012, the hull has been built and expanded with great discretion at the Kiel shipyard German Naval Yards, which, like Nobiskrug, belongs to German Naval Yards Holdings GmbH according to a design by Philippe Starck . The keel construction and the rig come from the Dutch company Dykstra Naval Architects , which also equipped the Maltese Falcon . The sails were made by Doyle Sails (USA), the teak used comes from the Spanish company Teak Solutions ( Valencia ). A total of 1,278 elements were installed. The Kiel public prosecutor's office is investigating the allegation - confirmed by DNA analyzes - that the wood comes from illegal plantations .

For a long time, the ship was covered during construction to protect the paintwork from the weather. This covering was removed for the first time in April 2015 and the first test drive took place on September 21, 2015.

The SY A is designed as a three-masted mast, the height of the masts made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) by the southern English company Magma Structures is around 90 m. They are the largest free-standing ( unstayed ) masts made from carbon to date . The manufacturing company spent three years developing and producing. The three masts were delivered on a floating pontoon from Portsmouth to Kiel and installed there. The trees, on the other hand, come from Future Fibers from Spain . The largest single sail covers 1,767 m² of sail area, all sails are set fully automatically. Due to the high masts, the sailing yacht can only leave the Baltic Sea through the Drogden , an 8 meter deep sound between Amager and Saltholm in the Öresund .

The yacht has a total of eight decks . The keel is made of curved glass at the lower end so that one can observe the underwater world.

The hull is made of steel, which is coated with a special plastic layer.

The bow is preceded by a platform slightly above the height of the waterline, from which the foremost part of the bow is illuminated from below. A little above the waterline, about 20 lights radiating from the side could be seen on the exit on February 5, 2017.

The construction costs are announced to be around 400 million euros, the actual costs are not known.

drive

In addition to the sail area distributed over three masts, the ship is powered by two diesel units, each with 3,600  kW output , each of which acts on a 5-blade controllable pitch propeller. In addition to the diesel engines, there are also two electric motors with 4,300 kW output each. Various operating modes are possible here, i. H. Diesel-mechanical drive with optional use of the electric motors as shaft generators , use of the electric motors in addition to the diesels (booster operation) or purely electric drive. In addition, four diesel generators, each with an output of approx. 2,800 kW, are available for power supply, which can be operated in a variable speed range between 1,200 and 2,050 revolutions per minute, depending on the load requirement.

The top speed is specified as 21  knots (around 39 km / h). Its range under motor at an average speed of 16 knots is 5,320  nautical miles .

Commissioning and transfer from the Baltic Sea

The ship was put into operation on January 27, 2017 and on February 3, 2017 the Nobiskrug shipyard in Kiel officially delivered the yacht without the owner being present. The public was also excluded here, only a small group of invited guests, such as Ulf Kämpfer , Lord Mayor of Kiel, and the former Prime Minister Peter Harry Carstensen , were present alongside the shipyard employees.

The ship left Kiel on February 5th and passed the Øresund on February 6th. She then made a stopover in Kristiansand , Norway , to have the export certificate issued for the reimbursement of German VAT . In mid-February, the yacht entered Gibraltar for a refueling stop , where it was arrested . The shipyard applied for arrest after the owner owed an amount of around 15.3 million euros, but had already deposited 9.8 million euros in an escrow account of the buyer's lawyers in London. On February 21, 2017 it was announced that the shipyard had reached an agreement with the buyer and that the arrest should be lifted after payment of 5.5 million euros to another trust account in Gibraltar. On February 22nd, 2017, the yacht finally left Gibraltar with a course for Cartagena .
