German Naval Yards in Kiel

The German Naval Yards Holdings GmbH (GNYH) is a German holding company of shipyards in the Kiel Fjord , the Nobiskrug ( Rendsburg ), German Naval Yards Kiel (formerly HDW-Gaarden ) and Lindenau (Kiel) united. GNYH belongs to the international Privinvest group. The German shipyard group with a good 1000 employees achieved a turnover of around 250 million euros.

The company is an international shipbuilding group. It employs around 1000 people and is particularly involved in the construction of frigates, mega-yachts and the repair of ships. So far, ships with a total length of 200 meters can be laid on the keel . In addition to the three German shipyards, the Privinvest Group also owns the French naval shipyard CMN , the Royal Navy spin-off Isherwoods in Great Britain and 75% of Hellenic Shipyards in Greece.

GNYH is a 100% subsidiary of the European shipyard holding Privinvest, which in turn is owned by the French-Lebanese entrepreneurial family Safa . In total, Privinvest has so far invested a three-digit million amount in its German shipyards.

activity

GNYH operates in three business areas: German Naval Yards Kiel (GNY Kiel) specializes in the planning and construction of large naval ships with a focus on frigates , corvettes and patrol boats . Nobiskrug is one of the manufacturers of superyachts and Lindenau is active in the repair business. Under the umbrella of the holding company, GNYH has merged the management and administration of the three shipyards Nobiskrug, GNY Kiel and Lindenau with the aim of using the neighboring locations in a balanced way and using their infrastructure and skills in a complementary way.

The group's shipyard infrastructure enables the construction of large ships. Among other things, GNY Kiel has the largest dry dock in the Baltic Sea region (426 meters long) and a crane with a lifting weight of up to 900 t; Nobiskrug uses a dock hall that is 160 meters long and a 200-meter-long dry dock. The Lindenau shipyard has a floating dock and 480 meter long pier systems.

Shipyards of the German Naval Yards Holdings

The three shipyards of German Naval Yards Holdings are continuing the shipbuilding tradition in the Kiel Fjord and in the Kiel Canal .

German Naval Yards Kiel

German Naval Yards Kiel emerged from the surface shipbuilding of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) and has a naval tradition: Ships of all frigate classes that are currently in service with the German Navy were built at this shipyard. The company history of the largest German shipyard, HDW, dates back to the founding of an iron foundry and steam boiler construction company in 1838. In 2011, HDW Gaarden GmbH initially became Abu Dhabi MAR Kiel GmbH , which was renamed German Naval Yards Kiel in 2015 . In March 2020, an agreement on cooperation with the Lürssen Werft Group was concluded.

Since then, Nobiskrug has built 750 ships, including internationally award-winning yachts like the Mogambo . The latest deliveries include Flying Fox and Odessa II . In 1986 the shipyard went bankrupt. In 1987 it was bought by HDW, with whom it merged in 2005 to form ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG (TKMS). Lindenau in Kiel

Lindenau was founded in 1919 as the Memel-Lindenau & Cie. Founded in East Prussia and rebuilt in Kiel-Friedrichsort after the end of World War II. At this new location, the shipyard used to be known primarily for the construction of special tankers and research vessels . In the GNYH group, Lindenau is now concentrating on repair and maintenance work. The new building was discontinued and the Helgen was demolished. Operation of the dock ended at the end of 2018.

German Naval Yards Holdings

With the takeover of Nobiskrug in 2009, Privinvest entered the German shipbuilding sector. This entry was made by Abu Dhabi MAR LLC , at the time a joint venture between Privinvest and Al Ain. A short time later, Privinvest took over the shares in Abu Dhabi MAR held by Al Ain and thus became the sole owner of Nobiskrug.

German Naval Yards Kiel (formerly the shipyard HDW-Gaarden or ADM Kiel) became part of the shipyard association in 2011 after talks about a more extensive takeover package to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) did not lead to any result. In 2013, Privinvest also acquired the previously insolvent Lindenau shipyard.

Privinvest is now the sole owner of all three German shipyards. In 2014 Privinvest combined its three German shipyard locations under the new company name German Naval Yards Holdings GmbH . As a result, GNYH renamed the Kiel Naval Yards German Naval Yards Kiel (GNY Kiel). The shipyard group justified this name change with an emphasis on naval shipbuilding and the complete takeover of ownership by Privinvest, whose German activities were bundled under the umbrella of GNYH.
