Scene World ( SWO for short ) is a disk magazine ( Diskmag for short ) for the Commodore 64 home computer . The magazine has been published regularly since 2001.

history

Scene World was founded in November 2000 by various people under the direction of Joerg "Nafcom" Droege from the Commodore scene.

The actual presentation system of the magazine was initially programmed by Robin Harbron, who was later successfully involved in the creation of the C64 DTV .

Harbron stopped his active support for the magazine in 2001. The presentation system has since been documented, modified and expanded by various members of the editorial team and external supporters.

Since the creation of Scene World, attempts have been made to cover both NTSC (North America, Japan and South Korea) and PAL (Europe, Oceania and the Middle East), which has made it possible to bring these two demarcated regions closer together. Scene World is also one of the few disk mags that actively tries to pick up personalities who do not explicitly belong to a crack - or demo scene - subculture , which are mostly picked up by other disk magazines. It was therefore possible to conduct interviews with various computer industry pioneers who are not related to Commodore.

Scene World has attracted media attention several times. In March 2001 Droege was interviewed by the radio station Bayern 3 . Droege was interviewed by Lotek64 magazine in October 2005 and in LOAD # 2 magazine in 2013. In addition, Scene World published a joint issue with the befriended English diskette magazine Loadstar ( ISSN  0886-4144 ) in 2003 with the motto “Wild West”.

content

Outputs are published as downloadable data carrier image files, which can be started in emulators or on real Commodore hardware. The text appears to the reader by means of presentation software which enables the user to read the articles and scroll through the displayed text. Further features include changing the background and text color, switching between different fonts , changing the displayed logo, changing the music, or deactivating it entirely. A special feature is the support of a 1351 Commodore mouse , as Droege assumed when designing the system that it would be based on the GEOS operating system and would offer more reading incentives for American Commodore users.

The texts of the magazine are divided into articles or chapters and cover various topics, such as news, interviews (text-based or transcripts of video interviews), opinions, editorial content, demo party reports or hit lists from scene publications.

In addition to the C64-specific files, a PDF on a floppy disk cover is attached to each issue . These “diskette sleeves” can be printed out by the readers and used as a protective cover for their physical diskettes.

further activities

In 2012 Droege expanded the activities of Scene World to focus on video interviews; starting with Michael Tomczyk and John T. Draper , and later with other technology pioneers such as Martin Cooper , Bil Herd Chuck Peddle , Jeroen Tel , Yash Terakura , Walter Day , James Bach , Alexey Pajitnov , Stewart Cheifet , Chris Huelsbeck , Jeri Ellsworth , and Ralph H. Baer . Baer's interview attracted particular attention in the press as it was the last and longest interview he gave before his death in December 2014.

In July 2014 Scene World expanded again, this time with an audio podcast , moderated by editorial member AJ Heller, with Joerg Droege as co-moderator, who primarily focuses on technology personalities and those who have recently made the headlines present their products or services. Guests so far have included copyright , social networks , security and privacy journalists Lars Sobiraj, Frederik Schreiber and Mike Nielsen from 3D Realms , Matt Falcus and Sven Vößing from Cinemaware , SiREN and Esper from Ubisoft ’s Frag Dolls professional Gameing team and Charles Martinet , who - besides other things - lends his voice to Nintendo 's Super Mario .

Scene World is currently (as of 2015) created by a group of 21, whose members all volunteer to publish two issues per year - usually once in winter and once in summer. Guided Skype video interviews will appear together with the next issue.

The podcast appears every two months and is not based on the publications of the Diskmag editions.
