Slava Mogutin

Slava Mogutin (actually Jaroslaw Jurjewitsch Mogutin , Russian Ярослав Юрьевич Могутин ; born April 12, 1974 in Kemerovo ) is a Russian journalist , author and photographer . Due to the threat of prosecution as a result of his investigative and provocative work, Mogutin was forced to leave Russia in 1995. He received political asylum in the USA and has since worked mainly in New York .

Life

Mogutin grew up in the Siberian industrial city of Kemerovo. After the divorce of his parents, he separated from the family and came as a 14-year-old to Moscow . As the partner of the publisher Alexander Schatalow (* 1957), Mogutin quickly established himself in the Moscow literary and media scene. So he worked u. a. as a journalist for Nezavisimaya Gazeta , Moscow News and Stoliza magazine . In the early 1990s he got a complete edition of the work of Yevgeny Kharitonov in the Glagol publishing house ( Глагол ). In the environment of the later banned National Bolshevik Party of the writer Eduard Limonov , Mogutin became known as a militant representative of the Russian gay movement. After the publication of sexual riots by former Komsomol officials and nationalist-racist theses on the first Chechnya war , investigations and threats against Mogutin took place.

In 1995, Mogutin left Russia on the advice of his lawyer. With the support of American organizations, Mogutin was granted political asylum in the United States.

Since moving to the USA, Mogutin has worked as an author, photographer, translator, actor , model , call boy and porn actor .

In 2000 Mogutin returned to Russia for the first time. During his stay, he received the Andrei Bely Prize for his lyrical work , which is considered the oldest independent literary prize in Russia.

Mogutin's text works include poems, reports, essays, interviews and translations. Most of his books have been published in Russian. a. the autobiographical work America in my pants ( Russian Америка в моих штанах , 1999) or the essays Roman mit Deutschen ( Russian Роман с немцем , 2000). Mogutin also translated works by Allen Ginsberg , William S. Burroughs, and Dennis Cooper into Russian.

Visual work

Mogutin began his photographic work after emigrating to the USA. Since 1999 his pictures have been shown in exhibitions in North America and Europe and published in renowned magazines such as Visionaire , iD , Face or Stern . At Powerhouse Books in 2006 and 2008, the volumes of photographs published Lost Boys and NYC Go-Go .

As an actor Mogutin worked a. a. in Bruce LaBruces Skin Flick (1999), in Laura Colella's Stay Until Tomorrow (2003) as well as in several porn productions by the Russian-born director Michael Lucas .
