Bruce LaBruce (born January 3, 1964 in Southampton , Ontario ; actually Bryan Bruce ) is a Canadian filmmaker, writer and photographer. LaBruce currently lives and works in Toronto . There he writes and photographs for the Honcho and Inches magazines, among others .

Life

Bruce LaBruce attended film school in Toronto and studied film theory at New York University . His artistic beginnings include working for gay punk fan magazines ( Fagzines ) and producing Super 8 films. He publishes photographs in various independent magazines. In 1996 he achieved an international success with the film Hustler White . The film deals with the prostitute scene in Los Angeles. One of the cast members is Madonna's former lover Tony Ward. LaBruce has also produced a number of controversial, subversive films in which he mixes the artistic techniques of independent film with the aesthetics of gay pornography. His films often deal with breaks from cultural, sexual, and interpersonal norms. Bruce LaBruce is considered one of the most important directors in New Queer Cinema . His films have been shown at the Berlinale , the Sundance Film Festival , the Venice International Film Festival , the Toronto International Film Festival , the Festival del film Locarno and the Museum of Modern Art .

Bruce LaBruce also worked as a theater director, a. a. in the Hebbel am Ufer , on Kampnagel and at the Theater am Neumarkt Zurich .

In his 2008 film Otto; or, Up with Dead People , Marcel Schlutt plays one of the leading roles.

The German actress Susanne Sachsse plays in three of his films and four of his theater works.

For the collection of short stories Nachtfieber , published by Bruno Gmünder Verlag , Bruce LaBruce wrote the short story Canadian Roulette , which is played in the Sneakers Club in Toronto .

In 2011, Angélique Bosio's documentary about Bruce LaBruce, The Advocate For Fagdom , was published and shown at the Berlinale , among others . In 2004 and 2008 there were films by Bruce LaBruce, namely The Raspberry Reich and Otto; or, up with Dead People . In 2014, his black and white feature film Pierrot Lunaire , which is about a woman disguising herself as a man and her relationship with a girl from a better family, won a Teddy Award .
