Dennis Cooper (* 1953 in California ) is an American author, poet, journalist, blogger and performance artist .

Life

Cooper grew up in Pasadena , California. His literary talent showed up early on. In his youth he imitated Rimbaud , Verlaine , de Sade and Baudelaire . His poems as a teenager often dealt with extreme, scandalous subjects. After finishing school, Cooper attended Pasadena City College and later Pitzer College .

Cooper traveled to England in 1976, where he was in the punk scene . There he also started the Little Caesar magazine . With the success of the magazine, Cooper founded Little Caesar Press in 1978 , where he published the works of authors such as Amy Gerstler , Elaine Equi , Tim Dlugos , Joe Brainard and Eileen Myles . In 1979, Cooper directed an alternative poetry program Beyond Baroque in Venice , California. In 1984 Cooper moved to New York City and in 1987 to Amsterdam , where he completed his novel Closer . He later won the Ferro-Grumley for gay literature with this novel . While in Amsterdam, Cooper wrote articles for Art in America , The Advocate , Village Voice and other magazines.

Cooper returned to New York City in 1987, where he wrote articles for Artforum magazine . Cooper began writing his next novel, Frisk . In the following years Cooper worked on various artistic projects, including the project AGAINST NATURE: A Group Show of Work by Homosexual Men (together with Richard Hawkins). In 1990 Cooper moved from New York City to Los Angeles , where he worked with artists such as musician John Zorn , painter Lari Pittman , stonemasons Jason Meadows and Nayland Blake, and others. Cooper completed his five-part novel series George Miles in Los Angeles in 2000 . Other works followed, such as My Loose Thread , The Sluts (winner of the Lambda Literary Award 2005) and God Jr . Cooper has lived in Paris since summer 2005 , where he wrote several plays and works with the French choreographer Gisele Vienne and the musician Peter Rehberg . He also wrote other books, especially poetry such as The Weaklings .

In 2006, Cooper started a blog on Blogspot (denniscooper-theweaklings.blogspot.com), which subsequently became known as DC’s or The Weaklings , found numerous readers and became a meeting point for an online community of writers, artists, publishers and musicians . Contributors included the writers Blake Butler , Justin Taylor , Derek McCormack and Ken Baumann , the poets Kevin Killian and Ariana Reines, and the musician Bradford Cox . On June 27, 2016, this blog was deleted by the Google subsidiary blogspot.com with reference to an alleged violation of the terms of use and without giving a reason . Attempts by the author to reactivate or to find out more precise reasons were unsuccessful. This process met with widespread criticism in the media. Suzanne Nossel, director of the US PEN , also expressed the organization's concern about Google's actions in a press release:

"Disabling Dennis Cooper's blog with no explanation and no assurance that his years of work have been preserved undercuts the trust that users place in online platforms that host their work and ideas."

"The deactivation of Dennis Cooper's blog without explanation and without assurance that the results of his years of work will not be lost undermines the trust that users place in online services that they use to make their work and ideas available."

On August 26, 2016, Dennis Cooper announced via Facebook that Google had deleted his blog due to a picture published in 2006 that had been reported as child pornography by an unknown person, but had since given him the data from his blog.
