Joe Brainard (born March 11, 1941 in Salem , Arkansas , USA , † May 25, 1994 New York City , United States ) was an American artist and author who is counted to the New York School .

Life

Brainard spent his youth in Tulsa , Oklahoma . He and Ron Padgett , Dick Gallup and Ted Berrigan became friends in high school when they founded the literary magazine The White Dove Review , which appeared five times in 1959/60. Brainard attended the Dayton Art Institute and later met his former colleagues in New York City .

Brainard's circle of friends in New York after 1964 included Frank O'Hara , Kenneth Koch , Alex Katz , Edwin Denby , John Ashbery and many more. He and Kenward Elmslie had a lifelong friendship that was not permanently tarnished by love affairs with other people. At the beginning of the 1980s he was looking for a distance from the artist scene. He died in 1994 of pneumonia caused by AIDS .

Brainard has influenced both the visual arts and literature. His works cannot be assigned to any particular art direction, even if he frequented the New York School. He made assemblages , collages , drawings and paintings , as well as illustrations and book covers ; also sets and designs for theatrical costumes .

For his literary work I remember , Brainard collected almost 1,500 fragments from childhood and art, history and politics, family, school and the body. In the memory that always works with the same introduction "I remember ..." in his book, there is no support, no appreciation of particularities and meaning.
