Peter Axel Schmitt

Peter Axel Schmitt (born August 5, 1948 in Mannheim ) is a German translation scholar and terminologist . He teaches as a university professor at the University of Leipzig , Philological Faculty, Institute for Applied Linguistics and Translatology (IALT).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1967, Schmitt completed a three-year apprenticeship with the Bundeswehr Technical Service. From 1970 to 1974 Schmitt studied applied linguistics, translation and interpreting in Mainz at the Germersheim , Bath and Lisbon locations . After graduating as a qualified translator, he worked as a technical translator in a German-American engineering company in power plant construction until 1980.

1980 to 1997 he taught at the University of Mainz in the Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim; At the Institute for English and American Studies he was responsible for technical translation, technical terminology, technical drawing and translation studies. In 1983 he did his doctorate with Karl-Heinz Stoll as Dr. phil. with a thesis on Anglicisms in the technical languages , in 1996 he qualified as a professor with the title Translation und Technik . In 1997 he accepted the professorship for Linguistics and Translation Studies (English) at the University of Leipzig. His teaching and research are shaped by practical experience as a technical translator and interpreter.

Schmitt had a lasting influence on translatology with his diverse areas of interest in research and teaching. He examined various fields such as technology and engineering, including automotive technology, mechanical engineering and power engineering. He also turned to the cultural specifics of subjects such as natural sciences and technology and dealt with comic and theater translation. He did research in the field of terminology and lexicography and developed modern, term-oriented dictionaries. As a representative of functionalism and action orientation, he had a lasting influence on university translation training.

Schmitt lives in Markkleeberg, is married and has a daughter.
