Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators
The Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators e. V. (BDÜ) is an association based in Berlin .
With over 7,500 members, it is the largest German professional association for interpreters and translators . He represents over 80 percent of all organized interpreters and translators in Germany. The BDÜ has been a member of the International Federation of Translators since it was founded .

There are 11 regional member associations as well as the professional group-oriented "Association of Conference Interpreters e. V. (VKD) in the BDÜ eV “.
The association is managed by a board of directors, whose president and vice-presidents are elected by the member associations. An employed managing director runs the office in Berlin. The board members of the individual member associations are elected directly by the members at the respective annual general meetings. The duration and possible limits of the term of office of the board members are regulated individually by the individual statutes.
The president, currently Norma Keßler, is responsible for the overall representation of the association as well as the management of the association's policy, the vice-presidents hold departments such as B. sworn interpreters and translators, standardization, training and further education, public relations, social media, terminology, website. In addition, various federal officers assist the board in individual subject areas.

history
The BDÜ went on September 30th / 1. October 1955 emerged from the merger of several more regionally shaped translator associations. The number of members at that time was 580 (excluding Berlin). Back then, as it is today, the commitment to the recognition of the profession and good training conditions was the focus of the association's commitment.
In the 1980s, the outsourcing wave in the industry also hit many salaried translators and interpreters. The focus of the association's work shifted to supporting the freelance work of translators and interpreters in all facets.
Since the turn of the millennium, the BDÜ has been intensifying its training activities in order to give its members inexpensive opportunities to train in the linguistic, technical, translational and entrepreneurial areas.
Trade journal MDÜ
In its specialist journal MDÜ (also available by subscription for non-members), the BDÜ currently provides six issues per year on professionally relevant topics and the work of the association. The edition is 8,000 copies.
BDÜ Weiterbildungs- und Fachverlagsgesellschaft mbH
In 2003, the BDÜ founded its Service GmbH in order to economically separate business activities such as the publication of specialist books, the implementation of seminars and congresses from the activities of the association. In 2010 the company name was changed to better reflect its business areas. The publishing program includes both books on general topics relating to translation and interpreting as well as titles on specialist topics in the industry. In addition, the BDÜ Weiterbildungs- und Fachverlagsgesellschaft mbH offers specialist seminars lasting several days, such as seminars abroad in the field of law. In addition, BDÜ Weiterbildungs- und Fachverlagsgesellschaft mbH organized the specialist conferences “Translating into the Future” in 2009 and 2012 with 1,600 and 1,200 participants, respectively, and in 2014 the FIT World Congress “In the field of tension between man and machine” with 1,600 participants from all over the world
Fees for translation and interpreting services
The fees for translation and interpreting services must be adequate for the service provider. The association's price recommendations are not possible due to the many factors that are included in the price for a language service and due to the requirements of the Federal Cartel Office. The prices for translation and interpreting services for courts are regulated in the Judicial Remuneration and Compensation Act (JVEG) in the current version of August 1, 2013. Thereafter, a line with 55 characters including spaces is remunerated at 1.55 euros (1.75 euros for non-editable texts) and 1.85 euros for difficult texts (2.05 euros for non-editable texts). An hour of interpreting in court is remunerated at 70 euros (consecutive) and 75 euros (simultaneous).
All other fees for interpreting and translation services are freely negotiated between the client and the contractor. As information for all involved, the BDÜ carries out a fee survey every two years and publishes the results broken down by language direction and client type in its fee table for translation and interpreting services.
