The Society for Applied Linguistics was founded in 1968 and, with around 1,000 members, is one of the largest and oldest linguistic specialist societies in German-speaking countries. The GAL bundles activities and initiatives that focus on researching and optimizing language learning and language acquisition as well as communication processes in everyday and professional fields of application. This includes scientifically based solutions in the fields of business , justice and administration , healthcare , educational institutions and the mass media . It promotes young academics (e.g. the Junior Research Meeting) and supports the transfer of linguistic methods and knowledge into professional practice.

The GAL is a member of the World Association for Applied Linguistics and its European branch and thus promotes the interdisciplinary exchange of scientific results and practical experience as well as the collaboration of people and institutions, nationally and internationally.

Meetings and congresses

The annual GAL meetings take place in different locations every autumn. A “large” conference, the GAL congress, and a “small” conference, the section conference, are held every two years. Participation in the annual GAL meetings is open to those interested.

Awarding of prizes

As part of the section and annual conference, the GAL awards prizes that are linked to special achievements or project ideas or that serve to promote young academics. The GAL sponsorship award aims to support an ongoing research project in the field of applied linguistics, which is characterized by a clear application focus. In addition, the young talent award “Professional Communication” is awarded for master's theses and dissertations.

Publications

The GAL publishes the magazine for applied linguistics (ZfAL) and the book series forum applied linguistics (FAL) every six months.
