Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée or International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) is an international umbrella organization for national and regional linguistic specialist societies. The society has over 8,000 members.

Effective range

The association was founded in 1964 as part of an international colloquium on applied linguistics at the University of Nancy, initially as a European initiative. Hence the originally French name as the basis of the acronym. In the meantime, more than 8000 scientists are active in the AILA worldwide through the member associations. AILA is a recognized non-governmental organization (NGO) with official advisory status with UNESCO and the Council of Europe . According to the statutes, the AILA pursues the goal of actively promoting international and worldwide academic exchange in relation to all sub-areas and related sciences of the multidisciplinary field of applied linguistics . To this end, it networks national and international activities and initiatives, e.g. B. on the research and optimization of language learning and language acquisition, multilingualism, language policy, multiculturalism and communication processes in everyday and professional fields of application. For this purpose, the association holds a world congress every three years, usually with around 2000 participants. The promotion of young scientists and the inclusion of scientists from financially disadvantaged countries in applied linguistic discourses is a particular concern of the AILA. To this end, it maintains a solidarity fund, from which scholarships for participation in the world congresses are financed. The association is governed by an international executive council. Bernd Rüschoff (D) has been president since August 2011 ; Secretary General since 2008 Daniel Perrin (CH). German applied linguistics is represented in the AILA through the Society for Applied Linguistics .
