Rayton Okwiri

Rayton Nduku Okwiri (* 26. March 1986 in Mombasa ) is a Kenyan boxer in the welterweight division .

Boxing career

Okwiri reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Games 2007 in Algiers and took part in the African Olympic qualification in Namibia and Algeria in 2008, but also did not get past the quarter-finals.

In 2009 he took part in the World Championships in Milan , but lost in the preliminary round against the Czech Zdeněk Chládek . In 2010 he started at the Commonwealth Championships and the Commonwealth Games in India, but lost his first fight against Aston Brown and Fred Evans .

In 2011 he won a bronze medal at the Africa Games in Maputo and took part in the 2013 World Championships in Almaty . There he defeated the Australian Daniel Lewis 3-0 in the preliminary round and achieved the first Kenyan victory at a boxing World Cup in 25 years. In the second preliminary round he defeated the Kyrgyz Erkin Bolotbek uulu 3-0, which he moved into the round of 16. There he lost again to Fred Evans (0: 3).

In May 2014 he won the Lion's Cup in Colombo , defeating the starters from Australia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Belgium. In July 2014 he was eliminated from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the round of 16 against the South African Thulani Mbenge.

Okwiri is also a starter in the APB series of the amateur boxing association AIBA, in which professional boxers can fight for the qualification for the Olympic Games for the first time. He reached second place in the first series (October 2014 to January 2015) with wins against Marcos Nader and Andrei Samkowoi , as well as two defeats against Onur Şipal . In June 2015, he lost to Gyula Káté , but defeated Eimantas Stanionis in July .

In March 2016, he qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics at the African eliminations in Yaoundé . There he defeated the Russian Andrei Samkowoi in the preliminary round , but lost to the reigning world champion Mohammed Rabii in the round of 16 .

On February 4, 2017 he made his professional debut and won in Nairobi by knockout in the third round against Salehe Mkalekwa.
