Max Baer (born February 11, 1909 in Omaha , Nebraska , † November 21, 1959 in Hollywood , California ) was an American undisputed heavyweight boxing champion and actor. Max Baer fought from 1929 to 1941. He had great clout and good taker skills. Boxing technique and hard workouts were not said to him.
Baer was popular with the public and known for his idiosyncratic humor. His brother Buddy Baer was also a boxer. In the early 1940s he failed twice in world championship fights against Joe Louis , to whom Max had also lost (once).
Max Baer starred in several Hollywood films, including The Boxer and the Lady (1933), The Fleet Breaks Through (1942) and Dirty Laurel (1956).
Life
In a fight on August 25, 1930 in San Francisco , the young boxer Frankie Campbell was killed in the fifth round as a result of a hail of Baers. The referee had not stopped the fight even when Campbell was already hanging unconscious on the ropes. Baer was very shocked by the accident and considered quitting professional boxing. He made it possible for the deceased's children to attend college through generous donations. According to his own statements, he had nightmares all his life about this fight.
Since his meeting with Max Schmeling on June 8, 1933 in New York , he always wore a large Star of David on his trousers during his fights . His father was Jewish and he wanted to fly the flag in Germany after the National Socialists came to power. He defeated Schmeling, who did not seem fully trained in this fight, by technical knockout in the tenth round.
He won the heavyweight title against the Italian Primo Carnera on June 14, 1934 with a victory by technical knockout in the eleventh round. Carnera had previously been on the ground eleven times. In his first title defense on June 13, 1935, Baer lost the title to the great outsider Jim Braddock by losing points after a turbulent 15 round fight. There were experts who saw Baer as the winner.
The next fight he lost against the aspiring and undefeated Joe Louis by knockout in the fourth round. In 1941, Baer ended his career after a premature loss to Lou Nova .
After refereeing a boxing event in Phoenix, Baer traveled to Los Angeles and checked into the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. In the morning he had a heart attack while shaving and called a doctor. He died shortly after in the hospital. He was buried in Saint Mary's Mausoleum in Sacramento .
In 1995 Baer was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and in 2010 into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame .
filming
The world championship fight between world champion Max Baer and his challenger Jim “Cinderella Man” Braddock was the subject of the 2004 feature film The Comeback (Original: Cinderella Man) with Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger . Max Baer was portrayed by Craig Bierko . The film shows the surprising comeback of Braddock, who was successful in the 1920s but has since fallen into disrepair, the climax of which is the world championship fight against Baer. For dramaturgical reasons Max Baer is portrayed in the film - outsider Braddock versus the much more powerful world championship holder Baer - as a dangerous thug who is hardly affected when he kills his opponents in the ring. Before the world championship fight, Baer even announces Braddock's wife in a heated argument that she will be widowed. In the same battle of words, he seriously advises Jim Braddock not to fight for the title against him.
