James Walter ("Jim J.") Braddock (born June 7, 1905 in New York , NY ; † November 29, 1974 in North Bergen , New Jersey ) was an American professional boxer and "undisputed" world heavyweight boxing champion from 1935 to 1937.
Promotion and unemployment
The Irish-born Braddock, who had tried his hand at various professions from 1919, became an amateur boxer in 1923 and a professional boxer in 1926. After he had previously won the majority of his light heavyweight fights by knockout , he lost a championship bout in the light heavyweight division against counter-boxer Tommy Loughran high on points in 1929 . He injured his hand, which had not healed properly for years.
With the stock market crash ( Black Friday ) in 1929 deprived of his fortune, he also got into enormous financial problems in addition to his sporting side. In bad shape he had to accept many fights on short notice for money and by 1933 had accumulated twenty defeats. He stopped for a while and was unemployed.
Sensational success in the heavyweight division
He succeeded in 1934 by victories against the hard hitting young fighter John "Corn" Griffin, his former conqueror John Henry Lewis and Art Laskey to become world championship challenger in the heavyweight division. All three had underestimated him after his series of defeats.
In 1935 he made a sensational comeback against heavyweight world champion Max Baer . Braddock said: “I already knew in the third lap that I would win. That was when Baer hit me on the chin with a Sunday blow and I held out. I am the happiest person in the world. Nobody knew the fight was going for me. Money, security, school for my children, financial help for my parents. If anyone ever went into the ring to fight for something, it was me. "
He lost his world title in 1937 to boxing legend Joe Louis after he broke the title fight against Max Schmeling because of an alleged hand injury. Schmeling had qualified for the title fight by his knockout victory over Joe Louis on June 19, 1936. Through a deal with Louis' management, Braddock secured 10% of all Louis stock exchanges from 1937. Since Louis remained world champion for twelve years, he made Braddock a wealthy man.
In his last fight he defeated the former Welsh World Cup challenger Tommy Farr .
His nickname "Cinderella Man" reflects the incredible rise from worker and provincial fighter to boxing champion.
reception
His grandiose return in 1935 was filmed in Das Comeback (Original: Cinderella Man ) with Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger in 2004 .
