Slidell [ slˈaɪdɛl ] is a city in the eastern US state of Louisiana on Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish . The town is part of the agglomeration of New Orleans .
history
The city of Slidell was founded in 1882/83 with the construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad from New Orleans to Meridian (Mississippi) . It was named after the politician John Slidell . In the 1910s, a creosote factory, a wood mill and a shipyard were built. In 1915 the creosote factory burned down, killing 58 people. The factory at Bayou Lake was later rebuilt. This polluted the lake, although it was used to supply Slidell with drinking water . Since there were many NASA facilities in the vicinity , the population grew rapidly since the 1960s. In 1986 the factory was abandoned and turned into a super fund. The redevelopment consisted of dredging the site and then burning the waste and lasted until 1996. A park was created on the site. On August 29, 2005, the place was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina .
