Johnny Dundee , actually Giuseppe Carrora , (born November 22, 1893 in Sciacca , Italy , † April 22, 1965 in East Orange , New Jersey ) was an American boxer .
Life
In 342 fights in the spring to lightweight he went only twice KO , but also won only 22 times by knockout. In lightweight he lost to boxers like Lew Tendler and Benny Leonard regularly, but in the lower weight classes he was superior.
Dundee was born in Sicily and started boxing professionally in 1910. In the No Decision era in 1912 he boxed an unofficial draw in a world championship fight against featherweight Johnny Kilbane and an official draw in 1913. Only eight years later in 1921, with 264 fights already completed, he was able to box for a title again, he won the super featherweight title by disqualification against the dreaded Southerner George Chaney, whom he had beaten before.
In 1922 he won the featherweight title in the NYSAC version. In 1923 he was initially defeated by Jack Bernstein for the super feather crown, but then defeated the hard-hitting French Eugene Criqui in a union of the featherweight title, had him four times on the floor, which Ring Magazine describes as his greatest achievement, and also won the super feather title back against Bernstein .
From 1924 he thought he could no longer bring the featherweight limit and also lost the super featherweight title, in 1926 he tried again in vain in a super featherweight title fight, in 1927 he competed against none other than Tony Canzoneri for the featherweight title. However, he was too tired from weight training that he lost and was booed after a desolate performance.
He let his career end by 1932. The Ring Magazine referred to him as the fourth-best Italian-born boxer of all time. In 1991 Dundee was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
Former Muhammad Ali trainer Angelo Dundee and his brother Chris, whose real maiden name is Merena , named themselves after Johnny Dundee.
