Professional career
Counter boxer Kilbane was a featherweight. He began his professional career in 1907 at the age of 18. On October 24, 1910 he boxed for the first time for the world featherweight championship but was defeated by the experienced Abe Attell over ten rounds on points.
There was a rematch on February 22, 1912. Kilbane beat Attell over the distance of twenty laps on points and became world champion. In the following years he defended the title several times. In 1913 he boxed it in a draw with Johnny Dundee . In 1917 he also tried his hand at lightweight, but had no chance against Benny Leonard and was knocked out in round three.
