Abe Attell (born February 22, 1884 in San Francisco , California as Abraham Washington Attell , † February 10, 1970 in New Paltz , New York ) was an American boxer.

The Jewish Attell was a counter-boxer who mainly fought at featherweight. In 1901 he boxed a draw with veteran George Dixon and then won the rematch. But it was only through victories against Johnny Reagan and Harry Forbes in 1903 and 1904 that he was generally recognized as world champion, before losing to Tommy Sullivan shortly afterwards via knockout. Sullivan saw himself as a world champion, Attell pointed out that both had weighed in over the weight limit.

When Attell beat Jimmy Walsh in 1906, he was finally recognized. He got 21 title defenses, including against Sullivan, Forbes, Kid Herman, Owen Moran and Johnny Kilbane .

In 1909 his younger brother Monte Attell also won the bantamweight world championship. It was the first time that brothers held world titles at the same time.

In February 1912, Abe Attell finally lost his title to Johnny Kilbane . He boxed for a few more years without having any significant success, so that he retired from the sport in 1917.

He was later accused of being involved in the manipulation of the 1919 World Series in baseball , but was acquitted like Arnold Rothstein for lack of evidence.

The Ring Magazine lists him as the third best featherweight of all time by Willie Pep and Terry McGovern , before Sandy Saddler and Salvador Sánchez .

In 1990 Attell was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
