Terry McGovern (* 9. March 1880 in Johnstown , Pennsylvania as John Terrence McGovern ; † 22. February 1918 in New York ) was an American boxer.

McGovern, of Irish descent, grew up in Brooklyn and never went to school. He was discovered when he took part in joke fights while working in a sawmill and pulled himself out of the affair so well that his supervisor persuaded him to box professionally in 1897.

On September 12, 1899 he beat the undefeated British bantamweight world champion Tom Pedlar Palmer in the first round KO and became world champion. In 1900, he also knocked out the aging legend George Dixon and also won the featherweight title.

In the lightweight he defeated Frank Erne and Joe Gans, among others . However, it later emerged that the fight against Joe Gans was a fake, resulting in a temporary ban on professional boxing in the state of Illinois for the next 26 years.

In November 1901 he lost his featherweight title to Young Corbett II by knockout in the second round. He also lost the rematch in March 1903 prematurely. In 1906 he failed while trying to win the lightweight world championship against Battling Nelson. In 1908 McGovern finally ended his career.

The " Ring Magazine " rated him the second best featherweight of all time. He is also one of the most powerful featherweights in history, alongside Sandy Saddler and Naseem Hamed . In 1990 McGovern was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
