Sandy Saddler (born March 23, 1926 in Boston , Massachusetts , † September 18, 2001 in New York ) was an American boxer .

career

Saddler started boxing in 1944 at the age of 17. He was a tall black man with feared clout and was the only featherweight to achieve over a hundred knockout victories.

In 1948 he met the Italian-American world champion Willie Pep, famous for his defensive skills . Saddler won by knockout in the fourth round. He lost the rematch but won the third and fourth fixtures prematurely. However, from letters that became public after the career, it appears that the fights were very likely discussed.

In 1949 he also won the half-light weight title, which at the time was not very recognized. Shortly before the end of his career, he lost on points to the Filipino Flash Elorde in Manila in 1955 , but then beat the southpaw in the rematch due to an abandonment due to lacerations.

In 1956 he was involved in a traffic accident which caused such severe eye problems that he had to end his career.

Saddler also defeated many lightweights in his career, such as Joe Brown , and boxed with Jimmy Carter in a draw. The " Ring Magazine " lists him as the fourth best featherweight of all time. In 1990 Saddler was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
