Angelo Dundee (2010)

Angelo Dundee (born August 30, 1921 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † February 1, 2012 in Tampa , Florida ), actually Angelo Mirena , was an American boxing coach . He and his brother named themselves after the former boxer Johnny Dundee .

Career

Dundee was born in Philadelphia in 1921 as one of seven children of Italian immigrants from Calabria . He learned a lot about boxing as a student of Lou Stillman. Dundee went to New York City and then to Miami , Florida , where he opened the Fifth Street Gym. Carmen Basilio was Dundee's first boxer to become world champion. Tony DeMarco had previously trained for a world welterweight championship fight. From then on, many young talent came to his boxing school, which has produced some of the greatest boxers in history. Dundee achieved international fame when Muhammad Ali won the world heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston . Even when Ali became a member of the radical Black Muslims , he refused to be trained by anyone other than Dundee, even though he was white. Some Black Muslims, e.g. B. Elijah Muhammad , tried to force Ali to separate from Dundee, but both respected each other and became friends.

Angelo Dundee traveled around the world with Ali and was the key strategic figure for Ali in the battles with Archie Moore , Floyd Patterson , Joe Frazier , George Foreman , Ken Norton and later Leon Spinks . Dundee was accused by Foreman of loosening the ring ropes at Rumble in the Jungle in 1974 to give Ali the win, but Foreman later withdrew those allegations. In 1994, Dundee was even in Foreman's corner when he managed to win a world title again with a victory over Michael Moorer and thus become the oldest heavyweight world champion of all time. After Ali's retirement from boxing, Dundee recognized the upcoming boxing star in Sugar Ray Leonard , whom he called "A Minor Edition of Ali". Dundee led Leonard to many of his greatest victories, e.g. B. the fights against Wilfred Benitez , Roberto Durán and Thomas Hearns . When Leonard first met Hearns, Dundee thought his protégé was lagging behind on points and shouted to him before round 13, “You're blowing it, son! You're blowing it! ”(“ You're screwing it up! ”). Leonard then won in the 14th round by knockout

Dundee trained fifteen world boxing champions, including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard , José Nápoles , Jimmy Ellis , Carmen Basilio and Luis Rodríguez, and was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994 . He was hired to coach actor Russell Crowe to portray Jim Braddock in The Comeback , and he traveled to Crowe in Australia , who then received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for that film .

Angelo Dundee died on February 1, 2012 in Tampa with his family. He had been hospitalized for a blood clot a week earlier but returned home.
