David Díaz (born June 7, 1976 in Chicago ) is a former American professional boxer and WBC world champion in lightweight.

Career

David Díaz boxed in the light welterweight division with the amateurs. He won the Chicago Golden Gloves in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996, and the National Golden Gloves in 1993, 1994 and 1996 . In 1996 he started at the Olympic Games in Atlanta , but lost there in the round of 16 against Oktay Urkal . In total, he won 175 of 191 amateur fights.

In 1996 he switched to the pros and won his first 26 fights, 14 of them prematurely. He beat Emanuel Augustus and Ener Julio , among others, in 2004 , before suffering his first loss to Kendall Holt in 2005 . In October 2005 he defeated Juan Polo Pérez by tKo in the third round and reached a draw against Ramaz Paliani in December of the same year .

In August 2007, he defeated Érik Morales in the fight for the WBC World Championship by unanimous decision, but lost the title in the first defense in June 2008 by a tKo defeat to Manny Pacquiao . A subsequent win against Jesús Chavez brought him another World Cup chance of the WBC, which he lost to Humberto Soto .

After losing to Henry Lundy in August 2011, Díaz announced his retirement from boxing in March 2012.
